I finally got my 75 250 running good. At idle there is a rattle and when I pull in the clutch it just about goes away. What should I look for when I pull it apart?

Check the tightness of the Crankshaft to clutch gear and the condition of the key if the nut is slightly loose. I thought the connecting rod was going out of one engine and it turned out to be a loose nut and worn key that required red locktite to get the new key tight in the keyway of the crank. Mike

gees I hope that 40 y/o clutch rattles !! Its probably the plates hitting the outer hub. See if there's any grooves on the outer clutch hub fingers where the plates contact it. And don't file them down, it will rattle even louder !!
at least when its rattling, the thing isn't stuck or welded together... yet !!

Also check for loose retainer bolts. My 73 WR250 had two retainer bolts come loose and actually make a groove in the clutch cover.
If the tabs aren't bent over the heads of the retainer bolts, they can back out.
Thanks guys, I'll chack all that out. Unfortunatly my penton is on hold, I now have a passat that needs a motor change.

Well Mike, you were right. I pulled the clutch cover and the crank gear was tight, but after digging deeper the key for the crank gear had been changed and was too thin. I could rotate the gear on the crank with pliers. I ordered the right key and presto!! the noise is gone.
Thanks everyone for the tips.
