If you don't have a manual that shows the amount,I have always took the spring out and bottomed the slider. Then set the oil level at 6 inches from the top of the slider. It should be a good starting point, then adjust as needed. I remember doing it that way back in the day.

I do every bike the way Dale just said. With spring out and collapsed, you can be sure that 6" from the top will be pretty darn close.

Thanks guys. I bought the manual but there must be a separate manual for the suspension because it is not in it.

They are right, it really is only way to set the forks up. I was surprised how much of a difference was needed to get both fork legs up to the same level,  The best I can figure is that because of casting difference, the levels will not be the same. I have seen them differ as much as 40cc's

Dont forget to stroke the fork to get all the air pockets out of damping rod area then let settle before final measurment. I am supprised how much more oil the fork will hold when taking your time pumping or bleeding the fork when setting the oil level.

I'm not sure if the forks from the 81 and 82 are the same, but hopefully this link will help. I have an 81 KTM 250 GS, and luckily I was able to find this manual online.
