Title: Wanted VDO Speedo Drive
Post by: tanz on December 08, 2012, 11:50:25 AM
Looking for a VDO speedometer drive for my 77 GS6. Does anyone know if these can be rebuilt?

Thanks
Steve

Steve,
The VDO speedo drives can usually be made functional as long as the internal gears are not trashed. I've had many of them apart and what I normally find is that dirt and etc gets into the gears and they will not turn freely which then causes the flat washer that engages the wheel hub to get damaged. Once that flat washer gets damaged the gears can no longer turn at all. If nobody has one to sell I'd be glad to take a look at yours to see if I can repair it. I'm currently in the process of restoring a 77 400 GS6 myself so let me know if I can help you out.

Dave,
Thanks for the offer. I've had it apart and cleaned it, if I spin the wheel the cable turns but if I put any pressure on the cable you can hear the gears start to slip. The bushings that hold the driven gear have some play so I think the gear is moving away from the drive gear. The gears dont appear to have much wear. Have you ever had one completely apart? I'm wondering if I can make new bushings for it.

Steve,
I have over 30 used ones. I will give you one, need the numbers
on yours so we get the correct ratio, hopefully I'll have the one
