Title: Frame/Engine numbers
Post by: Richard Terry on March 11, 2013, 07:13:01 PM
Ok I must be dense or something. I have read thru the production year guide and still confused.

I have a Jackpiner with a black engine, engine #52 36004010 and frame #54 40372572. It has the small mx tank with leather strap, the forks are 32mm. The frame has two upper shock mounts and the swingarm has five. The rear hub is a conical and the clutch cover is the rounded style that contours to the clutch.

The year is first followed by the month of production on the frame: The engine was produced in 1973, engine #52 36004010, (3) and is engine # 4010, which would be appropriate for a mid 1974 model that was finished in March of 1974, frame #54 40372572 (403)
If you look in the Engine # list the next one recorded is # 4068, also a 1973 175 engine, and a 250 with frame # 72342, also with a 403 build date. Mike

Has there been '74 models with the 32mm forks and a black engine?

Hey guys, The engine number that Richard listed is not actually the engine number...it's the casting number.  I've attached a picture of an engine number from one of my 1974 175's.  The format is as follows...the 4-represents the year of manufacture, the 52 represents a 175, and the 05820 represents the production number of the engine.  Check right above the front of the ignition cover for the engine number and let us know what you find.

Also, all 1974 Penton's had 35mm forks and and silver engines.  If you get a chance to post some pictures, we could help you figure it out a little more.  Kent

A '73 shouldnt have the conical hub and 5 position swing arm if it has 32mm forks and a black engine right? So many of these bikes were updated its hard to pin some of it down.

You're correct Brian, a '73 would have come with the large cush drive rear hub and a 3 hole swingarm.  The 403 frame number Richard has listed would have had the newer conical hub, but it would have still had the 3 hole swingarm. Kent
