Not only that, but I wonder how the turnout will be affected because of requirements for being licensed and registered. Most dirt bikes at these events don't even have titles. A lot of RR bikes don't even have working lights with PVL ignitions, Etc. Mike

There are Decibel meter app's available for your smartphone, not sure how accurate they are. Also Radio Shack sells a meter for $49.99.

Cool! I didnt even think of a smartphone app.

Sound issues are a big factor in land access up here in New England. My club lost the chance to have a hare scramble on some awesome property due to neighbors/town having noise concerns. Since Savoy State Forest is reopening that weekend just for the Reunion Ride, I want to show the MASS DCR that we are being responsible users.
Having said that, if anyone has experience with sound testing at events, alot of factors sway a db reading one way or another. My crew know you folks will be coming a long way. If you have fresh packing in a muffler, maybe a rubber flap/sleeve hose clamped over the tailpipe, you might be good to go.
If you want to do your own test, there's got to be clubs in your area with a sound meter. Maybe you can borrow it?
Steve, thanks for answering. Even doing something as simple as the rider standing between the engine and the meter to lessen the amount of engine rattle noise is a big help. I have used the trick of putting a section of inner tube on the end of the muffler, it works. I didnt mean to stir up trouble, I wanted us to all be aware of the sound test and prepare our bikes for it accordingly. I am 100% for quieter bikes.
Brian
The licensed and registered requirement is a deal killer unless I can figure out how to navigate the Illinois bureaucratic morass and get a title for the 39 year old Penton with just a bill of sale in hand. The sound and licensing requirements are probably going to hammer this event's attendance numbers.

No problem Brian. I just didn't want people to get scared away due to us having a sound test. Sound tests up here at NETRA events are common practice. It sounds like alot of folks don't have much experience with them at other events.
Steve, What about the liecense and registration plus, insurance. when we ran the ISDT RR in 2003 my bike had a fictitious and out of date plate on it nothing was said at tech about it. Lights and DB test is not a problem with my 175PE Besides the plates were mudded over after the first 10 yds. :D
Amherst Paul
Press your knees against the gas tank, makes a difference in the sound tests, the tech guys did it to my bike at a national hare scrambles, even though my bike easily passed.
Definitely not user friendly. The fun factor of this event is getting sucked out of it even before I even thought about getting my 'Piner ready to ride in it. This thing has gotten to rich for my blood and the comfort level of the requirements to be "legal" isn't there. This would be a $2000+ cost between fuel, travel, entry, lodging etc. and I would still risk having my bike not making the sound test requirements. Nice $25 welcome fee from NETRA too. I thought maybe a would play along with the Dual Sport ride but at $80...no thanks. Seems like everyone is trying to make a buck off this event. For those of you that make this event kudos to you but personally, I got a bad feeling about this one.

If a bike is iffy on sound check you can stretch rubber bands over the fins to help eliminate the "rattle" when they rev it up for the test.
Some Huskies used to come with rubber bands installed from the factory.

I'd like to hear from someone who has passed this 96db SAE J1287 procedure with a real vintage bike and what it took to pass. Some folks have talked about standing between the bike and the meter. Well suppose the test reg says that is not a valid test? I'm not trying to "what if" this to death but all you need is some A-hole ranger or greenie making a issue out of something and your weekend is ruined.

No air cooled bike will pass that test if it is performed exactly as it is supposed to be done. Far too much engine rattle that is damped with water cooled cylinders. You can limit that a lot with rubber straps around the cylinder head and rubber hose in the fins, but its still not going to pass a sound test done "by the book".
Brian
Tricks from back in the day...we used to have to pass sound tests at NETRA events back at the first junior enduros in the 70s.
Rubber bands over cylinder head fins (already mentioned)
Rubber tubing (pieces of heater hose) stuffed between cylinder jug fins...or hi-temp silicone seal.
Hi-temp silicone seal at cylinder/exhaust pipe junction and pipe/silencer junction.
Airbox baffling (or temporary partial cover) to quiet intake roar, as well as seal junction between airbox and seat edges with foam and/or duct tape (think extra waterproofing)
Rubber bands over any vibrating brake return springs or other vibrating springs.
Foam between airbox and side covers.
Foam between skid plate and bottom of engine.
Innertube slid on over silencer with several inches drooping off the end...putting a washered nut and bolt through the droopy end helps aim it downward and away from meter.
If you have one of those silencers with a directional end cap, aim it down and inward towards the rear wheel, or in under the rear fender (away from dB meter)
Rubber grommet mount any vibrating metal parts such as chain guides.
Basically remove all sources of vibration or sound amplification that you can.
I'm sure there's other stuff I've forgotten over the years.
Jeff DeBell
Keeping the pipe from rattling on the manifold is a big one. My modern CR500 Honda makes a huge racket and its all from the pipe rattling on the exhaust manifold. Rubber bands/straps on the cylinder and the section of inner tube on the end of the muffler/spark arrestor will also cut large amounts of noise. Those three things will probably get most bikes really close to passing, if not passing.

Question to experiences riders, will a standard exhaust system on a cmf pass the 96db sound test for the reunion ride in August?

Probably, but more of an issue is engine noise, fins ringing, etc.
Brian
It does seem diffecult to make a vintage bike meet the 96db sound limit. I'm going to give it a shot.I hope I can make it.
wfopete is right. Why is it way more expensive to ride a vintage ride? I pay 10 bucks entrance fee and 25 bucks to ride my modern bike. Seems like AHRMA is money hungry.

Derek, get ahold of these guys, they will get you a Vermont registration which you can then transfer to Illinois.

Brian
I just got my title, plate and registration from them. Less than $250 for sales tax, title work and 1 year registration. It only took about 3 weeks and I am very satisfied.
Thanks Brian - I sent them an e-mail.
Rob - are you planning on transferring the title to your home state and registering the bike there ( I'm assuming you don't live in Vermont)?
Please keep in mind there are "people" who monitor sites like this. You are better off emailing each other on how to get your bikes questionably registered than discussing it here on a public forum.
There is nothing illegal with the procedure Moto Recycle does, no reason to hide what we are doing.
Brian
Yes, I plan on transferring title to my state and getting a historic tag, as legally applied. And yes, the process is legal.
Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. I believe I mis-spoke in regards to you folks in Ohio. Here in New England there's always someone looking for trouble. Nothing's ever right when you're trying to do something different, but legal, at the DMV. Seems hard to believe, but they appear to enjoy finding something wrong. And as far as having a plate and asked questions about your bike, there will most likely be something wrong with what you have.
Must be the water.
I know what you mean Gordon, I lived in California and it was like that. It didnt matter if it was perfectly legal, if it was different than they were used to seeing at the DMV, it was bad.
Brian
I'm not sure how long it takes in other states, but i just transfered a title for my husky from IL to NY. I did it the first week of january and I still haven't got my title yet. The woman at DMV told me out of state titles take up to 12 weeks to transfer.

I will admit that I don't have any experience with getting my bike sound checked. I did a little "Interweb" searching on the SAE J1287 Sound Standard. This standard seems to be oriented for more modern bikes than let's say, a 1973 Penton. Are there provisions for older bikes like the previous 99dB or the like? Is this ride being approached as an "Historic" event or "Antique" gathering? Take for example a group like a Model T club or 1932 Ford club. Don't these antique vehicles have different licensing requirements than a modern car? They obviously didn't come with 3rd brake lights or catalytic converters back in the day. I do agree with quiet is better, no question but, I wonder if the 96 dB is remotely achievable with my 1973 250 Penton HS or 1983 IT250 for that matter. To say it's a big undertaking by the average POGGER to make this ride is a fair understatement. Just keeping the conversation going...:D

My simple questionis, for those that raced in the past, did the cmf pentons 72-75 pass a 96db sound test?? If not, an old inner tube on the end of the muffler and or rubber discs between the cylinder (or strips of inner tube rubbre around the fins )would be sufficent??

I cant wait till someone ask about forestry approved mufflers too[:0] I know all my woods bikes are quiet and there using the standard Penton issue exhaust and spark arrestor

Brian, Derek, Rob,
I live in Vermont and I think as I understand it, you simply had to register and insure your bike. I think you can do that in any State.?? Netra did not mention inspection of those bikes as a requirement to enter. That is the riders choice and thought.
peter klinck
To register a bike in my state you have to have first a title that is not stamped "Not Eligible For Registration" . To get said title when the bike either had no title to begin with or the title was lost years ago by the original owner and all you have is a bill of sale is pretty tough if not bureaucratically impossible except evidently in some states (Vermont). To drive all the way to Massachusetts hoping you'll be OK with a fake tag is a pretty risky bet.
They can require the bike to be legally tagged and registered in the state you are from, but if the state you come from does not require insurance, they can not force you to have it. They are probably not aware that some states dont require insurance on motorcycles.
Brian
We're a little fortunate here. No title needed for any bike over 25 years old.
I remember being at VMD and seeing big advertisement signs for 'Titles' on the backs of bikes riding around the swap meet. Can't be a fun process searching for one.
Derek/Brian,
Yes, in Vt. like some other States, a "bill of sale" is sufficient.
It will be tough if no insurance is required in a State but NETRA mandates it in Mass.?? Check on this. However, 100 bucks or less you can find the cheapest liability insurance and that will do it.
peter klinck
Brian,
Some riders could check with those who raced in the 30th ISDTRR in 2003 in Mass. whether ot not if a State you have registered a bike which does not require liability insurance, needs to get ins.? I'm sure a call to AHRMA would answer that question.
peter klinck
We've pre-ridden the Saturday AM and PM loops. Some of it is like riding on virgin trail, other trails have clearly shown the lack of maintenance that NETRA members used to do up in Savoy Forest.
We may have lost some trail, but we'll see.
To top it all off, man it is wet up there right now! Whew!!!
Heading up tomorrow for a pre-ride of day two's course, and to recheck some stuff we found on the first pre-ride.
I'll stay in touch.
Thanks for the update Steve. Quite a bit more rain on the way for next week too!
Thanks again for all your hard work. Keep us posted.
Yesterday's pre-ride of Sunday's loop was a bit of a disappointment. If some of you remember 2003's Sunday loop we took you north to a special test hill climb that had quite a lot of spectators on it. It WAS a fun section. Yesterday we rode it to hopefully use it again this year. What a washed out mess. It's impassable. Huge exposed rock and a rock face step up that left us pulling each bike up.
Oh well. We'll move the test and re-route around it. It was a section used in 1973. What a shame.
LET'S PUT A SUMMARY TOGETHER OF ALL THE SOLUTIONS TO PASS THE 96d TEST BELOW AND OTHER CONCERNS:
1.)put your leg tight to the tank blocking some noise from the cylinder to the meter.
2.)attach a piece of inner tube to the end of the muffler using a large hose clamp. it should be about 10 to 12' long (?).
If your are going, bring and have another piece of inner tube if you have it for someone who does not pass the db test.
3.)shift earlier into the next gear.
4.)show a bike registration card and plate on the bike. If a State you come from does not require insurance, I believe you will not have to have it. Call the AHARMA guys. They expect riders to comply but they are not going to go digging like a policeman.
5.)check from the 2003 riders on how they solved the registration and sound issues.
6.)lighting: have the light parts on the bike. There are plenty of street legal bikes on the road that have a tail light or head light that don't work and yes, if they got stopped, they would be asked to fix it as soon as possible getting some kind of notice.
7.)put strips of rubber on your cylinder head to reduce the noise.
8.)install cut old pieces of radiator hose between the cylinder fins. Wedge them in there or just purchase a couple of feet at the auto parts store.
9.) there are surely other solutions which I did not include.
Hang in there Brian, Pete P., Derek and all.

Not sure if this has been asked, but I'm curious what folks will be bringing with them on the ride and what types of carriers will be used.
For example: extra plug(s), tools, how many, what types, tube(s) water. And also, how you will be carrying your parts and tools; back pack, fanny pack, bike rack; basically what and how?
pklinck, thanks for the summary of quieting the bikes.
I always tend to "overpack", a throwback to the old days when the mantra was "if you have a spare with you, the part won't break in the first place"...ie. if you carry a couple of extra plugs you won't foul one, but the first time you ride without one you'll find yourself dead in the water. But...expendables are a lot better quality these days, so if, for example, you've got fairly new cables, routing or carrying spares is probably unnecessary for an event as short as the Reunion Ride.
I still overpack and carry a fanny pack with an assortment of metric wrenches, allen wrenches if those are needed, crescent wrench, vise grips, screwdrivers, pliers, electrical tape, baling wire, spare plug(s), zip ties, a couple of grease rags, tire irons, master link (s) and anything else I can think of. If you are going to carry a spare tube, pack a 21-incher. You can stuff it in your 18-inch rear and it will work just fine until you can change it out...or you can do as I did, put one in at the Ohio Reunion Ride and forget it is in there until you change your rear tire almost 2 years later!

Here's another product I just ordered to add to pklinck's list for quieting the fins down. I'm running a 73 Husky that has a lot of vibration and motor noise.
Not sure how politically correct this is for you folks, but I do a lot of hunting with archery gear. These things are unbelievably effective at quieting down a bow to a dull thud upon release. I'm going to try them on the bike.

I will venture to say - if you go back 40 years, the 48th ISDT and having the U.S. Trophy Team on Pentons. HAS to be the single biggest event in the history of the Penton motorcycle !!
If you have a Penton between July of '73 - July '74, it most likely wore this sticker proudly on the tank strap.

Rob,
Thanks for posting the photo of the 1973 Ohio State Championship race at Lexington. I helped pay for the trophies at that event. On the first lap of the 100cc class, I popped several spokes out of the front rim of my bike after jumping the drop off before the roller coaster hills. I thought I had a flat tire because the front end was wobbling. That ended my racing for that day. At least I got to hear my name announced to the crowd before the start of the race.

Al, it's so cool that you were actually in that race with me!!!
Hey guys, with the help of Dale, I was able to track down Mark Outland thru his brother Kevin . I wanted to reach out to him since us two are the only ones still living (in that '73 result). Both Kevin and Mark were super nice and both glad I found them.

That was a great event ; 1) this region of the country is beautiful, 2) the weather for the entire event was a divine gift, 3) trail quality was outstanding, 4) the Hoellerich's were excellent hosts and the Vintage Trail Bike Museum is a must see, 5) I pitted next to three New England riders (Kevin, Gordon and Bob) who proved the South have nothing on New England when it comes to hospitality (thanks Kevin for the couhaugs (spelling?) and steak Friday night), 6) Saturday morning Mr. Penton signed my 74 motocross tank and then that evening at the banquet heard him deliver a very inspirational message, 7) heard many ISDT Vets at the banquet recount their experiences, 8) being at the very location and riding a Penton on some of the same trail used in one of the country's biggest pieces of dirt bike history. All these items combined to form what will undoubtedly be one of my most memorable dirt bike related experiences. Thanks to the Pathfinders and anyone else associated with putting on this event.
There was alot of talk before the event about noise regs and street legality, anyone have any issues? or did all go well for everyone?
Had a blast at this event. Everything Derek said X 2. (quahogs) Was a pleasure pitting next to Derek.
I was on my 73 Husky. Unfortunately the lock nut on the clutch adjuster bolt that works the push-rod came loose, fell off and sent the bolt through my case cover on Saturday. I was able to finish the day with help from a Husky guy named Craig and my riding buddies Bob B, Kevin D and Dan G. Once the clutch was fixed, we ended up siliconing a piece of inner tube over the hole and gorilla taping the piece of tube to the cover. The cover never leaked a drop and I was able to catch up on the second half of Saturdays loop and never missed a beat for the rest of Saturday and all day Sunday. Unfortunately the repair put me longer than one hour to a check, which automatically gave me a DNF. But I finished!!
No issues with noise or registrations. Looked to me like everyone had done what they were supposed to do and were prepared for the inspection.
At the ISDTRR in North Adams, Mass., It was great to watch Bob Wardlow in the motocross special test at the end of the second day.
In his heat, he got out in front at the beginning on his 75' mint 400 and no one could catch him. His skills were fun to watch on the track. In fact, so much fun that I forgot to take pictures with the camera sitting in my hand.

The Pathfinders want to extend our gratitude to all those that attended the 2013 Leroy Winters Reunion Ride, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first ISDT held in the United States; 1973 Dalton Massachusetts. We were truly honored to host this event and hope you all enjoyed the weekend. We would be remiss if we failed to mention the many people that helped make this event memorable: The Hoellerich Family, State Line Riders Motorcycle Club, The Berkshire Trail Riders, The Meriden Motorcycle Club, Trail Rider Magazine, NETRA, AHRMA, NETRA Photos, our loyal sponsors, Frank Frey, our friends at the Massachusetts DCR, Jack Penton, Paul Clipper, Poirot Family, Luczynski Family and the list goes on and on!

Besides Mr. Penton's incredible accomplishment riding the 2-day Legends Dual Sport ride. My vote in 2nd place for "Most impressive Penton ride" goes to Teddy for his great ride on a Steel Tanker. Teddy is a treasure, I love that guy.

These are all the pictures, and results I could find. Thanks to Dale Fisher for most of the pics. I know I'm missing people, and the results only show the riders who are points paying AHRMA members.
Without question, in my book - it does'nt get any better than last weekend's ISDT RR.
More stories to follow....
After 40 years, Teddy Landers finally finished the Berkshire Trial on his steel tanker! Awesome! Happy 40th Anniversary to Teddy and Rosemary, too! :)

I WOULD LIKE ONE ALSO IF YOU PRINT MORE,THANKS.
It was a most wonderful weekend and it was glorious to finish the Berkshire after 42 years on the same Penton steel tanker Six Day. I bought my steel tanker new in January 1971, I was 29 years old. In the 1971 Bershire International Two Day Trial, there were 129 riders entered in the 125cc class and only 29 of us finished the first day which was 195 miles long. Midway through the second day, my arms had turned to marshmellows and I had to call it a day for safeties sake. I guess sitting at a desk all week long, every week, didn't properly prepare me for a two day enduro. After the adrenaline stopped flowing, I couldn't turn the key in the ignition of the car for two days, Rosemary drove us back to Ann Arbor, Michigan across Canada.
I thought it would be a great idea (even though everyone told me not to do it) to ride the weekend on the same bike I rode in 1971. It still has the orange paint on the major components that were put on it at tech inspection in 1971 before putting the bike in the impound. I felt like a tortoise last weekend, but the goal was to finish and the Penton did the job. Now I can retire the bike - I put the medal on the bike in the barn!!!
Rosemary was in her element at the banquet, she had a great time. She did a terrific job of putting together collages of pictures on large posterboard from 1971, 1973, 2003 etc. I think there were 10 posterboards in all. Thank you for all the appreciation that you gave her. Teddy
Ted,
That was a great thing you did and many POG members have appreciated the fact that you rode your 71 steel tanker. I agree, one has to get in shape a little before a race. I had for 2 weeks prior to the ISDTRR in Mass. jog, do arm and hand weight exercises.
That was impressive that there were over a 100 riders in the 125 class alone at the Berkshire event 42 years ago. Our friends and family members can be discouraging at times when it comes to 2 wheel events at the older age.

Congrats to you Ted. That is quite an accomplishment!
Does anyone here know if a video was made of this event, like Duchin Productions made, back in 2003? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywR9y2rJwb4
I'm hoping some video from this event will appear in John's upcoming movie as well.
I hope they made a video. The 2003 video is a must have!

Hi all,
I had a great time up in MA this year at the ISDT RR !! My thanks to the Pathfinders MC, Stateline Riders and the Hollerich family for hosting this year. This was my 10th straight year to ride in this event and its always something I look forward to because I get to ride it with my brother. The trail sections this year were a blast and I really enjoyed the challenge they gave us with those technical terrain tests through the rocks. I love my Pentons but sure was glad to have the extra suspension my Yamaha IT200 provided in the PV200 Int class. My hat is off to Teddy Landers and all the others who rode in the vintage classes this year because they certainly earned their medals !! I'm already looking forward to 2014 as this will mark the 20th anniversary of the 1994 ISDE held at the John Zink Ranch just west of Tulsa, OK. As a member of the Tulsa Trailriders, I'd like to invite everyone to come help us celebrate this milestone by riding with us at the Zink Ranch once again next year. The date we have chosen for next year's ISDT RR will be Oct. 24-26, 2014 so please mark your calendars. I'll be posting more details in the coming months as they become available. I'm hoping we'll get a great turnout of veterans once more and I'd really like to get as many veterans as possible who actually rode the 1994 ISDE to attend so please be sure to pass the word. If anyone has any questions concerning next year at Zink please don't hesitate to contact me. Once again, a huge thanks to the Pahtfinders MC, Stateline Riders and the Hollerich family for all the hard work they put in to make for such an enjoyable weekend this year in MA !!

I just got mine in the mail.
The Commemorative Program above is loaded with great stories from the 60's and 70's Berkshire Trials and ISDT events. Many of them include John Penton and other .... "experienced" POG members, from back in the day. Great stories from cover to cover and much of them revolving around the Penton brand.
I never realized how grueling the Berkshire was. In 1970 450 riders sighned up and only 43 completed the event!! Here's a quote from that years event. "Penton teams took home both the club and trade team trophies, proving the competition fitness of John Penton's lightweight creations."
This is probably my favorite read of the year!! 60 pages of great stories.
Thanks for offering it even after the event was over.
The 2013 ISDT RR t-shirts are now available for purchase.

I realize I'm way late on this but the sound check rule SAE J1287 is bikes made prior to 1-1-98, it is 101db. Never had a problem with my 77 250.
