Any way to replace the plug wire on a red wire Motoplat coil?

I have one that came on a bike with a yellow Accel car coil wire just spliced into it. It works perfectly but I just use it as a spare.

I was told by one of our repair resources it is also possible to rehab a black wire coil by splicing a diode into the spark wire.  In essence, it now becomes a red wire coil that would be needed if you have an internal stator diode that fails.
