Title: SixDays wont run
Post by: Mickey Sergeant on August 31, 2013, 12:47:16 AM
Thers a lot of info here so I will try to get it all in. Picked the bike up about a year ago. Motor wise ran good, except for shifting problems, which I have fixed. about 2 races ago I started noticing it was hard to keep it idling and transition to mid range.Top end starting to make motr noise also. once it got to top end ran ok.started noticing smoking more.. came home pulled top end. Dad and measured piston clearance,14thousands.I'm not kidding.checked multiple times. Also pulled ignition cover pulled on crank ,play in crank, split cases rod ok bearings worn. not shimed correct.Had top end done and ported like my Berkie 2 years ago it runs great.Shimed crank, new bearings and seals. Now cant get it to start.Every once in awhile will get to idle for a few seconds.Swithed carb from my berkie to check. Has a pvl, swithed from my berkie. only thing I didn't do was switch the magnet.there was a spot on the other one where it looked like it tuched the coil. question is can the magnet go bad from touching, sorry I know this is a lot of info

Part 2, pulled carb. Plugged for most part dry. Put a piece of rag in front of intake. kicked over not sucking in  but blowing opposite direction toward airbox. Is this possible. Had head off to double check piston in right. Arrows toward front

Mickey,

Pull off your exhaust pipe and make sure its not plugged up.

Thanks,

Reading post from others saying to check for pluged exhaust.never thought that could happen. I guess there is a first for everything. Switched pipe from my 100 and started on 3rd kick. ran a coat hanger inside and twisted.pulled out all kinds of sludge. now I need to find away to clean out.

From my experience, the packing can get really sludged up, but also the spark arrester can get carboned up also, depending on where it is in the pipe, and the temperature the exhaust is at that point. On my '75 Husky, the spark arrester is deep on the pipe, and is a half round, sphere shaped piece of wire mesh. It was completely carboned up and would hold liquid!. To clean a pipe, just burn it all out with a torch or some guys build a fire in an old steel drum, and put the pipe in there. It takes a while to burn it out completely. I take a torch and heat the pipe from one end to the other, getting it quite hot, until it quits smoking. Then I hang it and tap on it with a wood dowel until all the ash comes out. Do this in each direction. Then clean the outside thoroughly, and you are ready for a new paint job. I automatically do this as part of any project bike rebuild now.
   Type at you later,

I would say the stinger closed up.

No wasn't stinger, put in parts washer, flushed out, all kinds of sludge came out. Soaked for awhile then blew out with compressed air. Reinstalled and started first kick.. ended up going up on main one to 145 for porting done. test runs nice chocolate plug. Idles now, Pulls strong now off bottom end. Thanks for convincing me to look closer at the pipe

KJ and Daniel,

Yes, my 125 penton race bike had difficulty idling and acted as KJ mentioned above at the ISDTRR.  Today, using a torch, I applied heat burning it section by section red hot and got a lot of material out and then painted it but stopped applying heat before ALL the smoke was out, as you suggested.  I'm sure I got most of it though as I tapped the carbon out, ran an electrician's snake up and down, etc. and compared the tapping sound with that of another un-cleaned exhaust system, and what a difference.  Like tuning spokes.

I have been following this thread because I have a husky 125 that I bought several years ago. I have never had it running. When I bought it, it was stuck, we fixed that and I replaced the rings, scuffed the cylinder,  Back together it went  but would not start.  No spark. Sent the ignition to Vance.  Still it does  not run.  I figure the cylinder is glazed.  But maybe that is not the only problem.   I thought I had checked the pipe but maybe not..

I had a similar problem with a Jackpiner I rebuilt with the exhaust plugged.  I ended up using a torch and snake to clean it along with new packing. I had never seen it with any other brand I have worked on but will watch it now, especially with 6 Days I am going to do this winter.

Mickey,This may be a longshot but when my D motored 6 days had a defective top wristpin bearing it acted weird like that-the bad bearings had a grey color(not heat treated)there's a thread on here somewhere about them. They wreak havoc on your top end when they do go,and the timing will be bouncing all over the place(like your wrist pin).Just a thought.Ric

I blew compressed air through the pipe at first, coming out other end so thought was ok. When I ran a coat hanger up in pipe and twisted around and started pulling out slugg, thats when maybe it is plugged. Thats when I put it my parts washer and all the slugg came out. AS far as the crank not shimed corect, it didnt show up at first. Motor was rebult by someone else with one pice bearings. Eventualy I'm guessing that once the bearings started wearing from not being tight in case thats when the side play showed up, and maybe thats how I ended up with 14thousands clearence putting stress side to side on piston?. Like I said runs strong now. My Berkie was almost as fast but now there is a big diference. Both are ported exactly the same.
