Title: Penton Mudlark on ebay
Post by: Gordon Brennan on October 26, 2013, 02:33:06 PM
Beautiful Mudlark. 6 days left and over $2000.00. Maybe this is a good sign for the Vintage market.
Or maybe the people bidding don't know the Mudlark was the 3rd worst dirtbike ever made.:D

I inquired about whether the stickers had been reproduced and if there were any spares.  The answer was "a friend gave them to him".  I'm missing the front MP fork stickers on my Mudlark.

Now this thing is over $5000.00 and hasn't made the reserve. I was surprised it made it over 2000. Don't mean to be a skeptic, but seems a little odd. One ( private) bidder bidding 14 times, all the way up over $5000.00 is very uncommon.

We'll know if it was a buddy bid by it showing back up on ebay in a week.

I have had the same thing happen to me on a bike and I thought it was a scam, but the guy finally hit the reserve and bought it.  With ebay it is always a mystery.  It is a Very Nice bike as I have seen it in person.  NOS seat and tank and has a B engine so it is the real deal.  I wish I had not started on gathering parts for a Mudlark I bought sometimes back and I just bought three bikes.

Actually it isn't the same bidder since I bid on it several times and was outbid.  The seller is using the option to conceal the bidders code name that ebay assigns since they no longer show the actual ebay ID.

After looking at the pictures again that is pretty much a museum piece.  Just wonder what the reserve is set at?

You're right Ron. I had not heard of private auctions; only private bidders. That is why I thought it was odd to have 8 private bidders on one auction.

When I bought mine it had the original headlight and bar switch still on it, and I still have those. It also has WASSELL printed on the back of the seat.
Did all Mudlarks come through with the headlight, or was that added on later?

Gordon,
I have not seen that option used much except on high dollar cars.  The Mudlarks came without a headlight, BUT dealers put on  lights and who know what Ted Wassell sent Penton???  I do know some of these where used for forest use where trails were tight.  Great little bike and for all the people who thought they were junk just ask Dennis Jones as he won a National Championship on one and still has the bike.  This is a nice bike.

It's a great bike. I compete with mine all the time. At Ormstown, Mick Andrews switched bikes with me for a while and he liked it too, other than the high bars.
As far as the headlight goes, to me it looks like he took the fork headlight ears, turned them in, and is using them to hold the number plate.
$6600.00 now.

Very nice bike but, a lot of parts are not correct. Both fenders, shocks, throttle, petcock, wrong bend on brake lever, Bosch ignition instead of Motoplat for the 6B motor.

I'm glad it brought that, makes a correct one worth ?

I think the ignition system is PVL?  At least it had a NOS tank and seat....I wish I could find both for the project I have...

Both sides are "as smooth as a baby's skin".    The sides seem to have indents for your knees.    joe

Joes tank did not have the recessed area(s) for the emblems and has two petcock holes.  The tank is to the right of JP in this photo.
