Jerry,

Is that the first penton 400?  I noticed the 74 1/2 penton 400 the frame is different and the swing has the 5 rear shock positions.

That is an early 74 250. The 400 wasn't introduced officially until the 74 1/2 model year, and at that time both the 250's and 400's featured an improved frame with the multiple shock positions and a reinforced lower steering race supported area. I have an early 250 red tank HareScramler myself. Mike

mike is correct. this is actually a late 73/early 74. it does not have the oblong rear frame tube or the laydown shock position availability..chi jer

Hey Jerry, Nice bike! What size rear tire do you usually run on your competition 250 Pentons? I like the MT-16 Pirelli's for a vintage look. They offer a 400-18 (110/100)-18 or a 120/100-18. Thanks, Mike

thanks for the interest guys. bike is sold and will be going to a new home in florida. soon i will be building a REALLY nice 175 piner that i will be raffling off as a fund-raiser for my mission trip/ charity. (motor done, frame already powdercoated)  in addition, i will be building a 73 250 that will be almost all original(motor already done) and i'll build either a 400 or a 250 vmx racer. thats what i want to squeeze in as time allows over the winter but i have some other bikes that i need to help some guys with too. i really enjoy bringing these old bikes back to life. when they start on the 2nd or 3rd kick from not having run for 30 years, it gives me almost as much pleasure as pulling the holeshot racing.     chi jer
