Sorry need a twin shock.
Sold 2 '81 495s this past summer, not many floating around. A couple of years back I sold a really tight '79 420 that was a great rider/racer to Johnny Orbell of Woodland WA. He's been selling some of his collection of late--may want to check with him. Usually can finds his posts on Marks Vintage Swapmeet site. Good luck.

Jon,
I have a 1981 495 that is almost complete and I have a lot of extra parts. You reach me at 410-375-4481.

Tony
I have the motor and parts, workshop manuals (three total) and most of the dealer update pages for the 1982 250. and a 1980 250 bike.
I'm a little leery about a 495! I've heard they're a terrible to start and known to hurt people with kick back? Tony I know you had been restoring one? Done yet?
I know of a 1980 250 that is probably available
Never had a problem with kick back or starting 495, stock Bing and Motoplat set at spec for timing. Just helped to get up on a curb or a step stool in order to get a good kick when cold, the kicker is awfully tall.
Learned to never kick my old CZ400 with a tennis shoe on or risk limping from the likely bruise for a week. Never with the 495 though.
Jon,
Give me a call at 410-375-4481. I am in Maryland.

I just thought I would pass along that I purchased Tofriedel's KTM 495. If You ever want to buy a used Dirt Bike across the nation from somebody You don't know, Tony is the guy. I set up a U-Ship guy to go pick it up and Tony took over from there and handled all the logistics. The bike showed up as described and I have a restoration with all the hard stuff done for me. Best of all I have a rare open class bike to add to my collection. Thanx a bunch...
Good deal!
Mar-Gun,
Thank you for the kudo's. I am glad that you are happy with the 495. Send me some pica when you have completed the bike.
Tony
I haven't had enough time to really get going on it yet. I sanded the Tank and side panels long enough to realize that they should clean up real nice and then sent them out to be polished. I don't think that there is any gas discoloration from the inside out at all. It looks as though the original plastic had some sort of clear coat on it which yellowed.
Of interest is the Pipe. Did You realize how much work somebody has done to it? The 1st section coming out of the cylinder is original and where the pipe runs vertical is to. But the whole section between is all hand made, all hand hammered with out even using a set of rollers to make cones !! The amount of work and craftsmanship is very apparent. Somebody must of Crushed this section right off the Bat and didn't want to wait for a replacement Pipe.
I found a Twin Wire Motoplat Coil in Italy and am waiting for it to arrive. I was able to find the part Number in the Parts books You provided. Its a Red Coil Black Wire one, in all the Pictures I have seen they are Red Red.
The Metzlers have the correct date codes ( 16th week 1981) so they must be original.
Thanx again.
Any body know who was the original supplier for the Handle Bars on the 1981 KTM's ???
Im not sure who the supplier was ive researched it myself. I have a really nice original pair with the stock perches and levers. The things are a mile long, i guess all that extra length helps with the controlability of these monsters!

Ok, so by the sounds of it the original bars are not stamped with a brand name. In that case KTM probably made them. What color where they?
Mine are black

I have an old pair off an '81 495, steel, black. $30 and maybe $12 shipping if interested?
Also have a DC Plastic front and rear fender, 81 MX number plate, an orig acerbis front light/plate, VDO speedo and cable, other misc cables, Hi Point tank bag, new 52T Renthal sprocket, 38mm forks, some other spares. No pics yet or I'd already include here and put on ebay as all must go... but let me know if a serious need and will set aside. holeshotjohnny@yahoo.com
BTW, believe I have almost the same bike collection as Mr. Thompson. 200 EXC Jackpiner #102 is my regular woods bike.

I think Pete Petrick is still needing a set of 81 triple clamps. My 80 clamps were narrower with a shorter stem. Mike
