Title: clarke plastic gas tanks for high-breather
Post by: chicagojerry on December 11, 2013, 01:45:22 PM
i just got off the phone with heather, the office manager for clarke manufacturing. we were discussing the possibilty of them making a
hi-breather plastic tank. i would LOVE to see that happen considering how badly new gas has effected the old fiberglass tanks.  :D they would need a committment of about 100 tanks. how many of you would be willing to purchase one if they became available? they would be available in any of their standard plastic colors. they would be in the 220$ range. speaking for myself, i would put them on any of my racers and most of the bikes i build for others . i don't think that i would have any problem to committing to 5 to 10 myself. please chime in and if there is enough interest i will try to keep exploring these possibilities.  chi jer

I need one in yellow for sure, so count me in.  My tank leaks if I leave fuel in it.  I have a replacement tank, but want that for display.  I would rather have a plastic tank to race with.

I have no burning need for any tanks right now, but if I was I would be interested if they were replicas of the classic Toaster Tank. I guess replica Water Mellon Tanks would be OK also for some, but my idea of the classic Penton is with the enduro sized Toaster Tank. Seeing as it was layed up from fiber glass, a molded plastic version just like it should be possible. I would think that if word got around that they were definitely in production, and in appropriate colors, they would sell considerably more than 100. Higher production numbers maybe bring cost per unit down a bit?

Wow, I already have been using a new Clarke Toaster tank on my hi-breather with no issues.  4 years now and works great! 1976 GS400 Cross Country.

You can fit a Clarke Mc5 tank on a non HB frame; ( Clarke's mc5 tank is about 10 to 15% smaller than a stock mc5 tank) I was told(not by Clarke) that the tank can be filled with very hot water and will form itself along the back bone with some pressing down force.

I will have my slightly used orange Clarke Toaster tank, side panels, fenders and yellow PP headlamp assembly at the Lebanon Swap for sale.  Came off my 1976 GS 400 Penton and worked great.  Just restoring the bike back to original and don't need the stuff anymore. See you in March!

This is a clarke tank fitted to a high breather frame and It did take allot of effort. I would buy some for sure if they make the small 74 MX tank size that fits.

There is a guy in Indiana that does some bang up work.  I've been meaning to get him my MX tank to make a duplicate in aluminum.  Just never got the down time when I had $$ or had $$ when I had the down time.  I think he quoted me $800.  Here is some of his work.
