Anyone using the Amzoil product in their pre-mix?  If so, how do you like it?

I used it for a couple of years, it was about average protection. I have been using Maxima 2 stroke oil and I like it very much.

I have run Amsoil Sabre 100:1 in my record breaking Lake Erie Loop Cannonball Race in 2010. 24 hours and 3 minutes on my 50 CC Tomos Streetmate moped. Wide open all the time (hoping it would break)and never missed a beat or fouled a plug do to incorrect gas/fuel mixture. I have heard Maxima is good as well but for me it's Amsoil Sabre.

I used Golden Spectro for years up until about 10 years ago when I along with several other club members got heavy into modern trials riding ( still got a 2004 Beta 270). Some of the more experienced trials people recommended using the Amsoil pre-mix oil at 100:1 for trials.  I reluctantly followed their lead and experienced a very clean and crisp running trials bike and have ran the Amsoil Dominator Synthetic pre-mix since then in all my two strokes (50:1 in all but the trials bike). Pistons have looked good when seen during re-rings and no bottom end problems ever. I was always skeptical of the usually high dollar specialty oil sellers but I think this Amsoil stuff is pretty good. I use the Amsoil 20W50 Synthetic in the thumpers. Still use the Honda HP oil in the two stroke transmissions - not aware of any Amsoil trans oil.

I run all my vintage bikes on 100LL AvGas mixed with Klotz Benol. Smells amazing, incredible film strength. Been running this combo for years without issue.

I have been a Golden Spectro man since about 1972.  My standard mix is 50:1 and I run it in everything.....all motorcycles, snowthrowers, weedeaters, chainsaws, and have never had engine failure.   joe

50/50 110 race fuel and non-ethanol pump mixed at 32:1 Maxima 927. Unless you use Walmart $9 a gallon outboard oil, its virtually impossible to get a "bad" oil these days. Having said that, oils based on castor bean or other vegetable oil (Castrol A747, Maxima 927, Klotz Benol, Motul 800) have high temperature qualities that can not be duplicated by other types of oils.

Thanks for all the input fellas, personal experience means a lot!

Brian, when you say "bean oils have high temperature qualities" do you mean they tend NOT to break down at high temps?

I'm asking these questions because I'm thinking about changing oils.  I've been using Polaris VES Gold for a few years, only because it's sold at a local shop and easy to get.  No problems with the oil, but it tends to smoke and I don't like that.  All my bikes run good, and also the weed eater and chain saw no problems; just don't like the smoke.

Thanks again.

Bean and other vegetable based oils have much higher flash points and they can stand much higher temperatures, its a trait inherent to the vegetable oil that can not be engineered into a "synthetic".

Actually you want an oil with a low flash point so that it burns out when it gets on top of the piston. Once on top it has already done it's job and needs to go away. I like Maxima Super M and K2.  I also like Suzuki CCI but it is no longer available.

One definite benefit of synthetic oils is they usually are designed to have a higher viscosity index meaning their viscosity doesn't drop as severely with increasing temperature.

Hundreds of opinions, all good. I used Golden Spectro for decades after being steered that way by George Erl of UpTite Husqvarna many years ago. But it got more and more expensive, and was a spooge monster in my KTM 200. Went to Amsoil Dominator at $9/qt ten years ago-- burned cleaner, much less spooge, 40:1 in all applications, generally with 92 octane pump gas, sometimes 50/50 with race gas for motors that ping. Internals have always looked great. All good.

Opti 2 oil; 100:1  Helmut has been using it since 1976 without ever loosing a top end.  Burns clean, no smoke.   I switched over to it three years ago after using Amsoil at 70:1 for a long time.  I am very glad I made the change...
