Title: Swinging arm bearings
Post by: John Collard on February 13, 2014, 09:31:27 AM
I have a 1975 360 KTM (UK version almost the same as the mint 400). I am replacing the swinging arm needle bearings and expected to find  cartridge type needle rollers. When I removed the pin I found loose rollers running on the pin. Is this standard? It looks like the outer race is going to be a pig to remove. Any advice?

It's fairly easy John. Just use a small die grinder and cut through the bearing race and they will come right out.

I just did this... get a carbide burr for a die grinder and its a snap. Grind a pie out of the race get under it with a chisel and its out. Because I am a perfectionist if you grind a little to far you can work some JB wend into the low areas and once dry work it with a sanding drum on a dremel. Mine you could never tell I butchered it unless I told you. It does not matter if you don't fill it in, i am just a sucker to details.

Thanks guys, I guessed it might be like that, just like removing Metalastik outers.
Is the loose needle set up standard? Presumably assembly requires grease and patience.
