Aluminum fenders on the 250, Looks better than the plastic ones!
I can't read the fine print in the specifications, but the biggest thing I notice is that the 250 is call "The Mint" instead of "Harescrambler". I have read here on the list that it was originally intended to be named that, and I think that this is the first thing I have seen in print. Wish old man winter would finish releasing his grip so I could get mine out and organize my garage!

I see the 125 is listed as having 21hp and the 175 has 20? I don't know if this is correct or not. Less hp and more torque? Hank

The error is in the name...as mentioned above...
The 250 was the Harescrambler.
The 400 was the Mint.
The name came from a big desert race...which I believe started in the Las Vegas area...called the Mint 400.
Memory fades with my aging...but perhaps the sponsor was the Mint casino???

Yep,Del Webb's Mint Hotel and Casino was the sponsor-the real shame is it's a car/truck/utv only thing now,no motorcycles. That's discrimination!
I can see it now.

Thanks Ric (Sixdazed)for the History lesson about the name. I swear those days were so magical and we never knew it at the time. I know you have a lot of History of California Desert Racing and thanks for all you do for the Penton Name.

Was the original colour of the 250 Gold [?]... The colour of the tank in the brochure looks to light for red so it would make sense the name Mint would be gold.... BT

I like the part of the Specifications on the Mud Lark.....5 0r 6 speed transmission.

Hey Ron,Magical is the word for the 70's.If I had a time machine I'd set it for the 70's and keep it there.I'm looking for that App on my iphone.Later Brother,

Yes, it was yellow, sometimes referred to as gold. I purchased one of the first Hare Scramblers on the East coast from a shop in Baltimore and it was definitely that color. I distinctly remember that since shortly after purchasing it, I dropped the tank while removing it and a hole was punched in it by a foot peg. Yikes! Fortunately, it was an easy fix with fiberglass and a bit of spray paint.:)

Ok thks , Then to me they probably changed the name to Hare Scrambler when they changed the tank colour to red . Whatya think BT

weren't the first 400's named trask mountain, then changed to mint?

The yellow-tank 250 was known as the Hare Scrambler when I purchased mine, so I'm pretty sure the brochure is wrong.

I think some one on the list knows finer details, because here is where I probably learned what I know to make my post. I REALLY liked the yellow version, and can't believe my luck in finding a project bike of the '73 250. It raises an interesting question also that I think is still a mystery, and that is when did they start painting them red? Some think it was with the watermelon tank, but mine has the smaller MX toaster tank, and underneith the silver paint a previous owner put on it, was red paint on the tank and side panels, and underneath that was the yellow gel coat. Mine has a September 1793 serial number on it, but is definitely not a short travel early 1974. I think I had Mike Winter help me figure that out when I first got it, and I'm fixing it back up as a yellow tanker, and found a larger enduro tank to paint for it. Interesting subject!

VERY COOL! How could you look at that and NOT want one? I much prefer the yellow over the red, especially with the toaster tank.
Thanks for posting! What mag and month/year was that in, and can you scan and email me the rest when you get time?
