Title: Steel Tank Repair
Post by: Todd Rovello on May 21, 2014, 06:35:11 PM
I am fairly new to POG so if this is a repeat discussion, bear with me. I have a steel tank (Rupp) that I bought with a rolling frame. It was rusted inside so I filled it full of vinegar and let it set for several days. The vinegar dissolved the rust and revealed a couple of pinholes on the underside of the tank. These tanks are hard to come by so if it can be repaired, that would be my best option.  Any advice on fixing the pinholes? I was thinking about brazing the holes but would a liner then be necessary? Do the off the shelf liners work? I have read good and bad so any advice on what works and what doesn't would be appreciated.

I'm aa welder by trade, and will weld or braze anything if possible. I have not had any good experiences yet with two part tank liners. Cleaning and etching with the vinegar works well and that is what I use. Take some time to determine the extent of the decay around the pin holes. Sometimes it's not too bad and can be amazing how things rust, almost like someone drill the pin hole with a drill. You might want to consider a good silver solder over brass brazing rod, and if you can see and reach the inside, flow a layer on the inside in that area also. A little investigation and some good preperation will go a long way. You can sand the outside smooth and fill with a little body putty. You can even make a small dent on purpose where the pinhole is, and fill that tiny dent with silver solder to re-enforce the repair, and file/sand that off too the tank contour. Exactly how you would go about it depends on how bad it really is, even as far as cutting out a section and welding a new section in, if you can match the contour as necessary.
   Good luck and have fun,
