Post by: BrianTaylor on September 10, 2014, 03:44:25 PM
Well going thru this 6b engine that had a broken selector rod , I have created myself a problem....  I have the selector drum completly apart and the detents were intact  ( were intact ) :(... While trying to transfer a new rod thru ....both springs and detents came out ..... I have searched the forums and only found 1 mention by Kip K about having this problem but there wasnt any explanations of fixing  this problem or a process to do it ...... any ideas ... thks Brian T

The selector rod detents (Sacha calls them cups in the service manual) are held in by plugs. Think of the plugs as a very small water jacket plug on an engine block. Install your new selector rod in the main shaft, drop in the cups followed by the springs. Then stake in the plugs with a small punch.

got quick hands? you can push a same OD screw driver to compress the detents and butt up to the tip with the rod and follow through... a bit of lube helps ......some times the detent caps are spent and do not hold tight may have to slide the bearing collar over them

I have stuffed new springs and cups in place with an ice pick/awl and slid a phillips screwdriver in to hold them in place then followed it through in reverse with a new selector rod with no problem.  Just take your time

one or two times ... you will know after it gets lost when it pops and drops never to be seen again... use the bearing collar to hold
