Title: Picking a Dial Indicator
Post by: wfopete on October 03, 2014, 05:18:38 AM
After years of bumming off of friends, I decided to get my own dial indicator for setting timing on my Pentons. I'd like one that comes as with accessories for  reads both mm and thousandths, interchangeable contact point, spark plug adapter, relativity EZ to read and fits while the motor is still in the frame.

Recommendations?

Pete,

I have been using Central Tools Timing Equipment since the early 70's and I still have and use all of my original indicators.  My set does not have the conversion for metric VS inches.  But I never needed it while working on MC's.

I too have a set dating back to the 70's, well made, and accurate. And you can still get parts if needed. And they come standard and metric, so if you want metric, buy it that way.

Although not the same exact model as I have, this type of digital Indicator is very handy, which also includes the necessary extensions, offers metric or inch measurements, and can easily be zero set by the touch of a button. Gary Ellis showed me by using an old spark plug and breaking out the porcelain insulator and slipping a thin rubber hose into the plug, you can easily create your own custom holder. I usually also slip a short piece of hose or vacuum cap on the contact point. Mike
