Title: Penton Jerseys
Post by: rcrump1 on July 23, 2002, 05:39:22 PM
Has anyone reproduced the green Penton Jersey with the crest on the front and "Built for Champions" on the back? This would seem like a pretty easy project if it hasn't been done yet.
Just wondering.

I have reproduced all the original tank stickers and some of the old stickers like that one you talk of on the jersey.  I never thought about the legalities just trying to fill the needs and the demand.  John has not sued me yet so I guess that is a good sign.

Metro has reproduced the Penton jerseys like the ones Penton Central gave us riders that were shop and regional sponsored from back in "The Day" so maybe it is cool to do others.

Paul and Doug what do you guys think?  You probably know what John might think on this.  Any legal guys out there?  Is this public domain now?

If it is cool I can get them done easy as my sticker guy does jerseys and shirts and that logo is on his computer from the stickers I have.

I think it would go a lot easier if we obtained permission or a license from Mr. Penton. However, as the old saying goes, "Its easier to get forgiveness than permission" I can search the U.S. Patent and Trademark records and see if that logo is trademarked. If it was back in the day it may have expired by now. I will report back.

I did a brief search of the records of the Patent and Trademark Office. The "Penton" trademark as it relates to motorcycles and parts has expired. This may be why nothing has been said about reproduction tank decals. I could not find any information about a trademark on the crest logo. Even if it was not trade-marked, the Pentons would still have certain common law rights in the logo. To maintain the relationship and good will that exists between this group and the Pentons, it seems that the best idea would be to get permission. I think quite a few of us would want one or two of these jerseys if we could get them made.
Just my 2 cents.
Richard

Like Larry said earlier, Metro sells Penton jerseys. I don't think they have the crest on them though. Check them out at:

Just trying to help.   The crest is the official family crest that was presented to Johns English heritage, by the King of England.  That is another story.   I think that any reproductions that are made or used for or in relation to the Penton Motorcycle, John would have no objections.   He probably would even like to see or have one when they are available.

I would love to hear that story, Doug.  I have called my sticker guy and put this in motion.  He will be making them on the same long sleeve jersey that Metro uses and I will personally see that John gets several from the first run.  This will take several weeks as he stays busy but I will keep all posted.

We are getting them done in Green with Gold letters initially.  That was like the originals I remember.  I would like some input on a color after that run.

Larry;
My very dim recollection was that the printing was done in a yellow color. Could have been gold, but it was definately not a dark gold. Light gold or yellow? Anyone else remember?
Can't wait to get one. I'll really be living in the past. Deja vu all over again.

I have an original dark (royal?) blue jersey with gold sleeves and neck band and blue around the wrists.  I can bring it with me to Honda Hills if anyone wants to get the color scheme.  It was made by Champion.  I wouldn't wear it.....even if I could!  If this jersey deal works out I'd love to find one in black/white to match my 400 Mint.

Hi all!
I purchased one in about 69 or 70 (I think) and it was a white long sleeve T with the Penton logo and crest in Penton green, white and black.
Don't know if that's any help or just making matters worse!

I said gold but I am not good with colors.  My guy says it is yellow.  It is the color on the Metro jersies.  Does that sound right?

Thanks, Dan

The jersey I had in the 70's was made of some kind of "shiney" close weaved material, like some sort of nylon. And was lettered in a school bus yellow on a 6-day green.Does anybody know who placed the first order in the 70's and where they were bought?

I just found my old Penton jersey.  It is long sleeve, yellow, with the Penton family crest on the front and on the back, in big letters, Penton built for champions.  In the center of that, it says Penton Sport Motorcycles, built for champions with two checkered flags in the background.  There is also a small family crest directly in the center of the back.  The label says it is made by the Velva Sheen Company.  Mine is size large and it looks like a medium.  I do not think I could get back into it.  I do not think I wore it when I rode my Penton. I think I paid a lot for the shirt back in 1972/1973 and was afraid to wear it.  That is why it is in beautiful condition.  I also had HI-point boots but sold them back in the 1970's.

The blank jersies are in but my guys machine is broken.  It was just shipped back to the manufacturer for repairs.  Hopefully not too long but we are not first in line when it comes back.  My guess is by Thanksgiving at the worst but we hope before.  I would really like them by ISDTR and that is still possible.

Hi all....just came on here to sell a bike and I happened to see this post.  Regardig the Jerseys with the crests...I have one gold and one green long sleeve jerseys, never worn,  still in the original plastic package.  Also found a dark blue sweatshirt and a red sweatshirt in almost new condition with Penton on the front and Bohn Cycle on the back.  Also found two green and a gold jerseys that are fairly used in the same box with an original Penton watch fob and an orange Hi-Point Enduro timekeeper/counter that's never apparently been even put on a bike.  Still got the instructions with it too.  Neat stuff...I had no clue this stuff still existed until I started to pack up to move.  How about a speedo drive and cable that apparently came off a 175 jackpiner?  Is this stuff worth anything??  I'll keep looking.  John S.

Hi Paul.....yep about a hundred years ago I rode with the guys in the Pleasant Valley Enduro Riders.  I understand Ronnie and Jake are still riding, I'm sure you know them.  Are you still running uphill through the corn stalks to get in shape? ( How's that for a memory?) I guess these things are "collectibles" now...ha ha...I weighed about 130 lbs. then, so they're kinda small sizes. I've lived in Florida for the last 20 years and am active in the Florida Trail Riders.  Currently building a cabin in mtns. near Murphy NC and that's why I'm selling some stuff and packing up other stuff.  When I found the Penton stuff it raised some fun memories with some great people.  Say Hi to all the Pgh. people for me....Thanks for the reply.  John S.

WOW, This post has been read 1710 times! Clearly there is a demand for this style of jersey.
The issue was discussed at the POG meeting on February 7, at the AMA. Scott Brogan did the POG Six Days Reunion jersey which was very well received. He was present and expressed an interest in doing the classic Green/Yellow Penton race jersey.
The issue of patent/trademark infringement did not seem to be a problem with Mr. Penton, who was present at the time. The only issue is the current tax status of the POG, which does not allow for any income beyond the amount of annual dues received. Ed Youngblood is working rectifying the problem with that issue and it should apperently be looked after in the near future.
So, whether this item is done in conjunction with POG, or independtly by one of the members, it looks like an idea whose time has come. I know I would buy one.

WOW, 1710+ hits on this post! Clearly there must be a demand for this style of jersey.
The subject of doing this jersey was brought up at the POG meeting on February 7 at the AMA. Scott Brogan, who did the very succesful POG Six Days Reunion shirt was present at that time and expressed an interest in doing this style. Given what he came up with for the ISDTRR, it shouldn't be too big a stretch for him.
In terms of trademark infringement, Mr. Penton was present at the meeting, and did not appear to object to this kind of thing. Indeed it looked more like he is flattered and amazed by the enthusiam and interest after all  these years. The only other legal issue from the POG perspective is tax status - apparently POG at the moment cannot generate any revenue beyond annual dues. Ed Youngblood addresed this issue and apparently is in the process of having the tax status changed.
Whether it is done in conjunction with POG, or independently by a member, it would appear to be an idea whose time has come.

I bought a nice looking Penton jersey from Metro Racing for the 2003 ISDTRR. It's black with yellow PENTON across the chest and down both sleeves. I think it's also available in green, blue and red. They are cotton and run small so I ordered one size larger and it fits great. Peg Miller is the contact person I dealt with and I'm very pleased.
