Over the years it has been mentioned numerous times how the cost of fuel has impacted travel plans for different events. Hopefully, with the dropping of fuel costs, some of the events on "bucket lists" will be more feasible.
I don't know about you folks, but I never thought the cost of a gallon of gas would drop like it has. I have learned the hard way over the years to "never say never", but I don't think we will see 21 cents a gallon as I remember gas costing as a kid.
Remember all of those Sunday mornings stopping at the gas station and filling the 5 gallon can with fuel, and putting in the Hi-Point! Sure wish I had kept some of those old oil cans...:)

I'd like to see 99 octane leaded hi-test at the pump again, but I dont think that is going to happen either. :)

You can purchase several grades of high octane leaded fuel from a pump right now at many Sunoco stations. That is if cost is not a consideration. Next time you pass a Sunoco station, notice the separate pumps away from the main pumps. Or you can go on line to find the nearest Sunoco race gas outlet near you.

I use Sunoco 110 but there is nowhere to buy it at a pump anywhere near me.

Wow Paul, 21 cents per gallon! The lowest I can remember is when it spiked to 70 cents a gallon during the gas lines in the 70s. I think a gallon of diesel was 49 cents.

One of My most distinct memories of pumping gas at my parents business was when gas was .60 and a elderly gentleman thought we were the biggest crooks ever when it cost him 3.00 dollars to fill his 5 gallon can. I don't recall prices when I first started but remember when Nixon mandated labeling on the pumps ended after the Arab oil embargo the price was .32

I started to ride dirt bikes when I was 16 on a little Kawasaki 90, and Gas was in the 40 t0 50 cent range. I have memories of local gas wars at stations near the McDonnel-Douglas plant in Berkeley at Lambert Field,and they would get down to the 24 cent a gallon range in the mid to late 60's. There were three stations on Airport Rd. near the plant that would always leave a ladder up against the price sign to make it easy to quickly change the price. Sometimes it would drop a bit during morning rush hour, go back up a few cents during the day, then drop for the evening rush hour! All that and S&H Green Stamps also!
While I was in my last two years of high school, gas was around 50 cents a gallon. Like a lot of people, that is the age when my friends all started smoking, and since there was a law on the books that said cigarettes couldn't be sold to anyone under 18, they all had to buy their cigs from the machine in the laundry mat near the school bus stop. Cigarettes were 50 cents a pack over the counter, but a buck a pack from the machine! That was reason enough for me to NOT take up smoking! A pack of smokes cost the same as two gallons of gas for my bike! That was a no brainer, and I've managed to not ever pick up the habit!
When we went to the ISDTRR in Tulsa in 2008, I think, gas was 99 cents a gallon then at the stations in Oklahoma and south west Missouri. And it was REAL GAS! No Alky in it! Anyone else remember it that way?

When I was in high school we could buy 5 gals. of gas at the United station in Meadville, PA for $1.00, which would take the Model A a long way. Wolf's Head, Quaker State, Pennzoil, United, Gulf, Texaco, Shell, Sunoco, Atlantic, Esso, etc. all had small refineries in NW PA, in fact, Col. Drake had struck the 1st commercial oil well in Titusville in the eastern part of my county.
If prices stay low next summer, We will be hitting more races further away..
