Title: my first Penton
Post by: bikerhannes on January 23, 2015, 08:26:58 PM
i first saw this dirtbike in a shop buried behind hundreds of harleys. At first glance it was the prettiest dirtbike I've seen. Not the condition, but the style. i live in washington state on the coast. stuff rusts to the ground here. i friend knew right away thats a penton six day 125. I'm still young and never heard penton before but i have always collected dirt bikes and i have many. i love vintage. after that day i could not stop thinking about it. months went by and then my friend showed up at my place and had it for sale. Told me i get first chance to purchase if not has others that want it. i could not let it leave my sight and had to get it. but it was a sad little bike. engine stuck, forks stuck everything was frozen, but complete. once i got it in my garage i spent hours just staring at it. and then the fun starts and the money flys. i have now rebuilt the engine complete, all bearings and seals and have it back together. it fired up first kick and runs great and shifts nice. i got a good ten hours on it now. and i like it more and more every time i ride it. Now the next step is tear it down and restore it. i have already spent $250 on high end paint. but I'm afraid to take away the original patina.its only original once.

hi I am Hannes out of washington state. My passion for motorcycles started when i was 10. My dad traded a bay window for a beat up honda trail 90.  it had no spark. So we cleaned up the points and bumped started it and off i went. Ever since that i was hooked. i then traded it, for a broken hodka dirt squirt 100. i love getting broken bikes and fixing them. this is other reason why i love vintage. so simple to work on. i started getting getting into motocross and wanted to buy a modern cr125. That scared my parents and some how they thought i should buy a streetbike instead. didn't make sense to me. i was 16 then and bought a yamaha seca II 600 (everything i own i worked for) and rode all year to high school rain or shine. only kid at school that rode and all the girls wanted a ride. Man that was a great time. i'm 29 years old now and still collecting bikes. its better then paper money or at least i think so.

What u guys think restore or not and what has more value. i some times think that there is a guy that wants to restore himself and they might come harder to find unrestored which may increase value. i don't sell my bikes. but do not want to ruin the value and i do believe every bike should be used and enjoyed.

I can't remember the exact date but it will be early next month that I have owned my Hare Scrambler for 40 years. I never thought when I bought the bike that I would still have it and whats more still be riding it. Well almost. I bought my first dirt bike, a Suzuki TC 125 the year before but I wanted a better bike. My cousin who was riding an Ossa at the time said I should get a Penton. That is what he said even though here in Oz they are KTMs. So I spent the last year of high school dreaming of buying one. I had the Penton ad cut out and in one of my folders instead of all the girls I lusted over.I finished the school year with the thought of getting a job and earning the A$1200 to buy a KTM from good ole Al Patterson in Melbourne. (I lived in Canberra and still do)I saved every dollar and finally had enough to buy the HS. It was shipped from Melb to Canberra and a beautiful bike was ready to ride or so I thought. try as I may I couldn't get the bike to start. I even rolled it down a hill not far from home on a very hot summers day. No luck! Finally we went out to the local racers and got one of them to come back and check out the bike. Turns out the throttle cable was not connected! I'm only a slightly better mechanic these days but I knew nothing then. Then it started. My memories of it was that the motor was so crisp and seemed to have a fair amount of bottom end. Once you hit the pipe that was another story. My brother and I used to trail ride in the hills outside Canberra. I spent most of 75 doing this sort of thing. By this time my cousin had ridden the HS, liked it so much that he bought a 74 Jackpiner. 1976 saw us getting into enduros. I finished on bronze in my first two day but then had a few mechanical dnfs in later events. That mechanic again! Because it was basically a short travel bike I began looking for a longer travel one. In 1977 I purchased one of the first MC5s in Oz and began to ride that. The poor HS was neglected but always started. This went on till 1993 when I decided to get into VMX and restored The HS to its former glory. Since then I have ridden the bike in VMX, short vinduros and play time every year. Unfortunately late last year I suffered a gear box dnf so my wonderful HS is non operational at the moment. The external diagnosis is a sheared shift fork roll pin(not bad for 39 years of riding). I will get the engine split sometime soon and check it out so that I can still ride it. I'm sure it will start first kick as usual. The "Ancient" as I call it is on its third rod and third piston both of which have not been changed since 1993. Ok I'm not the fastest guy out there but these bike were truly made to last.Damn I've forgotten how to link a photo. Maybe tomorrow
