Title: Possible GS-7 400 for sale?
Post by: marsattacks on June 08, 2015, 09:17:08 PM
I stumbled across this:  http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/snw/5060872784.html

Listed as a 78 MC5.  Maybe it is.  But here are a few items from the crappy photo:

1.  It has the fender loop (unlike an MC-5 -- but my 400 had a bolt on loop that came with the bike).

2. It appears to have a GS tank and seat. Doesn't look like it has the forward mounting tab for the tank -- but also doesn't seem to show a strap.

3.  The fender is not really an indicator since it looks like an aftermarket Petty.

4.  A real tell-tale would be if it has two or three bolt side plates.

5.  The swingarm is of the MC type (side stand not center stand) but I know some GS bikes had sidestands (at least I'm pretty sure).

6.  The airbox is plastic not metal (indicating MC).

7.  Obviously someone got happy with a spray bomb of orange paint.

I believe that is a 78 MC5, (or early 79 MX-6).
Reasoning:
No GS-6 had that tank, but my MX-6 had it, same as Emduro MC-5 tank.
There was an available bolt on rear frame loop
Definitely MC-5 or MX-6 airbox
Position of side panel mounting tabs
I think the front tank loop is under the tank, as it looks like the tank is on there improperly, as mine was a lot closer to the pipe.

I will actually be going right past there on Friday to pick up Charlie Stewarts Husky to deliver for him to Northern Michigan Saturday morning if anyone needs me to pick it up for them. Call or text 618-553-1346 or email [email protected] before Thursday evening. Mike

Jon, thanks to you (for the bike), Gary Ellis (for the great engine rebuild), and Mike Winter (for the Enduro gas tank) I think maybe this is what a 78 KTM 400 MC5/GS should look like. It's a pretty amazing woods bike.

That bike that you posted for sale in WV is pretty good deal --- spray bombed or not -- LOL!

I always did like that tank! I actually just made a deal to buy the one that was on Marks Swap meet next week for $130. Mike

Well Mike, I tell you what, this tank you sold me was the proverbial icing on the cake.  And again, I'm grateful to you for selling it to me.

Are you using your recently purchased tank for another 78 or 79 project?

I still have the 2nd of my 79 250 MX-6's to restore. I sold the 1st to Doug Wade, which had that tank, but he wanted an MX tank, so this will be built with the new tank. When I got it, there was an ugly yellowed aftermarket plastic Enduro tank on it that I can't even give away! Mike

Here is a pic of the MX-6 that had the Enduro tank on it when I purchased it.

Here is a pic of what it looked like after I did the first restoration and raced it at the Park Hills ISDTRR Reunion Ride (Mudfest) in 2006.

Here is a pic of how I re-restored it for Doug Wade.

Here is a pic of the other one, which I actually bought first. Hopefully it will turn out equally as nice once I get a chance to start working on it after Mid Ohio.
