Title: 1979 KTM 175cc
Post by: Jeffrey Matyas on June 30, 2015, 07:21:24 AM
This is pretty close to the money I paid for my 1979 GS80 250cc https://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/mcy/5093904896.html Looks nice enough? Just needs plastic, has 1980 side panels and rear fender decals. Or maybe it is a 1980? Any opinions or wisdom to throw at it?

That could go either way. Looks like a 80 tank and some 79's had a frame mounted kickstand, and the 80 mounted to the swingarm. If its a 79 the frame # will start with a 9, and a 80 will start with a 0. Mike

Good point on the VIN numbers. My 1979 which as far as I know is mostly original. Has a January 79' frame date (with a 1978 code motor) and the swingarm mounted kick stand. The swingarm is aluminum and I have noticed both alum and steel swingarms on 1979 bikes. Seems like a good chance the craigslist bike is a 1980. Not that it matters a bunch just trying to learn all I can about these bikes.
