Title: Doug Wilford featured on ISDTRR shirts
Post by: Paul Danik on September 06, 2015, 05:33:21 PM
Greetings,

One of the numerous highlights of this years Leroy Winters ISDT Reunion Ride was the unveiling of this year's commemorative shirt, which features Doug Wilford.

The photo of Doug that was used is from the 1975 Isle of Man ISDT at which Doug rode a Hercules powered by a W a n k e l  rotary engine.

The is such a fitting tribute and the shirts are simply awesome.

The photo of Doug that was used can be viewed by clicking the link below and scrolling down.

PS For some reason when I spell W A N K E L normally in the text it will not come up properly in the post....

Thank you for this Paul - I'll be ordering one if there are extras.  The ****el-powered Hercules and "Sir" Doug Wilford.

That is an interesting (sorta well-researched) article.  But I must have spent 20-30 minutes staring at that 1975 Isle of Man ISDT Press Bulletin linked near the end.  It's like looking back in time:

One thing is clear: the West German Trophy Team kicked everyone's butt in huge, huge way.  Second - the diversity of bikes is amazing, even spotted a Dutch rider riding a Monark 175 and  - sure enough - two Brits showed up with Triumph 650's!  Still ran the Very Small Bore classes.  And - wierd - but did the Canadian Trophy Team all ride Jawas that year (Speedy?) or were my eyes getting sore trying to read this...

After attending this RR is amazes me how much great information is available there and on this site. From the ISDT vets and the rest of the riders. They are truly passionate about this sport.

The wealth of knowledge is priceless.

Definitely have to agree with that statement Dale.  Only wish I could've been able to attend the ISDTRR this year to see that Hercules run in person!

Speaking of ISDT, ISDTRR, and the current ISDE being held in Slovokia, here's some interesting info I found last night on KTMtalk.

I was reading a post on KTMtalk last night about the US Women's ISDE team and it mentioned that Frank Diaz, who rode in the 1971 Isle of Man ISDT, is the grandfather of Jaime Wells (US women's ISDE team member).

The same article provided a link to a November 1971 AMA magazine which covered the '71 IOM ISDT event.  It also included some very cool Penton, Husqvarna and Yamaha Enduro ads; and a story about the Jackpine enduro, and other interesting tidbits of info from that time.  A good read, indeed.
