Title: Penton/KTM special tools
Post by: Dave Withrow on September 24, 2015, 01:16:49 PM
To keep me from going stir crazy over the winter months I have decided to learn to rebuild motors.  To that end I am looking for any special tools to work on either the SACHS or KTM motors.  Thanks for any help or assistance.

Big Dave

Dave,  You basically need only a few tools.  Sachs KS Bolt socket-Al Buehner, Primary and clutch gear/hub holder plates-Al Buehner a set of case splitters-generic Motion Pro, Crank inner bearing race puller-Al Buehner (Air Conditioner fan hub puller)  Shift key installer socket-Al Buehner, Lay shaft blind bearing tool-Al B. and that's about it.  KTM engines, you can use a Husqvarna crank pusher to split cases and push the crank out of the left case.  I have a 3 ton ratchet arbor press to install bearings and seals.  If Al doesn't have all check Tom at Genuine NOS or go to Ebay and put "Sachs Tools" or "snowmobile tools" under search. I got most from Al, some from inventories and a bunch from Ebay

A few years ago a POG member(?) made a video detailing how to rebuild the KTM engine.  Does anyone know if this was done for the Sachs engine?

Thanks for creating and contributing to this thread...

Not me but if I had time I could do both KTM and Sachs along with a few others.  Big problem is time as I usually get buried in building bikes and painting tanks for folks.

My apologies Kip.  Perhaps you'd be interested in making a video documenting the restoration of a KTM & Sachs powered bike from start to finish?  I can't speak for anyone else but I'd contribute some $$ to help compensate your videographer...

FYI.  Stephen, you might be interested in a new TV series that should start very soon.  American Motocross Restoration.  Might help with the bike side of the restorations.
