Title: Penton Restomod/Repower
Post by: Patton on December 10, 2015, 06:43:18 PM
Purchased two Pentons recently, a '72 175 and a '74 125 as a parts bike. The '74 is missing the engine.

So...I did a search on repower to see if any of you had done a restomod-kind of thing with a later model KTM, disc brakes, etc.

Can someone point me in the right direction...or better yet, the direction of a Sachs "D" engine.

Thanks in advance, Robert Patton

Since it looks that 125cc engines are hard to come by (another member,Shawn, is looking for one too), perhaps a repower would be interesting to do.

Offhand (save me the research if you know, please), when did KTM go to watercooling?

Thanks, Robert Patton

Hello Robert Patton and welcome to the POG.  Must be near the holidays and everyone is at the mall, but wish you the best with whatever direction that you go.

I want to say that first KTM water-cooled 125 was 1982 or 83?  Your idea of a resto-mod is interesting considering there is a European (Italian?)artist who has drawn them (Toaster Tank Pentons or KTMs with modern suspensions, brakes, and - yes - water cooling).

If you are truly looking for a replacement Sachs 125 motor, try listing this "Want" on the Wanted/For Sale section.  You're right, they are hard to come by.  But you never know...

Bob, thanks for the kind words.
Will troll the for-sale area when I get a little further into the restoration. The frame goes out for powder coating this Friday.

Haven't there been several "Penda" bikes built, Penton frames with Honda engines of some sort or another? I think some used SL-125 engines and raced them in AHRMA MX?
  Good luck with the search,

Dave Sanders, 242,  posted pics of his Penton/KTM air cooled bike turned street legal Super Motard, but I can't seem to find his post. Mike

Looks like some good interest on the topic, just have to get some of the long-time members to find some links to the old post (something to do on a cold evening).

Thanks, all.

KTM's first water cooled bike was the 125/II LC in March of 1981. It had a cooling system with the radiator mounted under the gas tank feeding the coolant down to a water jacket cylinder via an exterior water pump driven off of a worm gear on the primary side of the crank.

I located pictures of Dave Sanders Supermotard 175 based on a MC 5 Chassis with upside down forks and disc brakes on The photo gallery under Dave Sanders. It's a blue bike lower in the group of pictures. Mike
