Title: 3 detail questions regarding '77 GS6 400
Post by: cageyar on March 04, 2016, 07:29:56 PM
1. Does the headlight in a Preston Petty front plate unit also fit in the original headlight nacelle number plate assembly? Or is the stock headlight a different light from the PP?

2. Did the rubber band attachment for the stock nacelle have other parts/brackets or is it just a band around the fork tubes and what is that center top screw into the headlight mount through the top of the orange plastic?

3. I've seen pictures of swing-arms with mounts for the center stand and I've seen a lot without the mounts - which was the stock setup and were the center stand style arms an accessory?

I'm going to buy the parts catalogs so I can do my own research and avoid unnecessary questions but I'm going to look at a bike next week so any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

Here are a couple of pics of an old partial headlight mask showing the attachment hardware and adjusting mechanism for the headlight aiming. I hope this helps. Mike

Gary
Mike sent me the headlight mask for my 77 250.  I'm using the mounting clips/bracket top and bottom.  Is there another part you see that you could use?  If so, I'd be more than happy to send it your way.

Do you or anyone else have a lead on the fork brackets that Cageyar is speaking about in item 2 of his post above?

Gary, I have another broken one with the upper coil held in place, but missing the bottom bracket, attachment bolt and switch you can have. I'll give you a call tomorrow afternoon, or call me. Mike
Skip, it had just a band holding it on I believe. I'll look it up tomorrow. I use a cut small diameter cord cut and tied together from a tent tie down cord.

Skip,
There appears to be 2 metal brackets that clip onto the forks and smaller individual o-ring type rubber bands 55.11.087.000 that hold the headlight mask in place, vs the larger single band I use to hold mine on. I have not seem them, but the part # is 55.11.086.500
Interesting to note is a plastic cover shield behind the headlight mask # 51.11.201.000 that I have not ever seen. The upper headlight retaining bracket is # 51.11.211.000 & coil # 51.11.210.000 and lower retaining bracket # 51.11.209.100 Mike

Mike, next time your down I,ll show you the clip, o-ring, and back cover. I have made the clips, and have the O-rings, there not that hard to make. As for the back cover it will not fit Toms fiberglass masks. The clips will with some grinding on the mask. Also Mike I found 2 of them fork decals you want so maybe with yours and mine we can make one. Did you get the decals yet, I hope this is what you needed.  Back to the headlight mask I have a complete unit off my 78 GS-6. I set it back with the  side covers and rear fender. Not for sale but as it gos on my Bike but you get pictures. Dave

Dave, they haven't shown up yet, but I figure they will be in tomorrow's mail. Gary needs a lens, so if skip hasn't used the one from the mask I gave him Gary could use it, or if you have one available he needs one. Mike

I made a custom walnut headlight mounting ring for both sides of a fog light which I purchased at Walmart to use in one of Tom's headlight masks. It sandwiches the light into the mask and is held in place with three small brass screws, but there is no adjustability other than shimming the headlight if necessary. Mike

Gary, I can send you the lens Mike gave me.  Email me your address [email protected]

Mike, I'm running the large single band like you mentioned too.  I have seen photos of the clips and back panel and did a search for them.  It looked like Dr.2stroke had a number of them many moons ago.  Also I read a number of post with very creative was to make them.

I'm sure they'll show up again one day, but in the mean time the single band will, work fine.  Thanks
