Title: Marzocchi rear shocks
Post by: Toolsurfer on April 11, 2016, 04:29:45 PM
Would like to get some expertise on replacing my Corte Cosso with the Marzocchi shocks on my 74 1/2 hare Scrambler . One of the Corte is weak the other seems fine . I saw the Marzocchi for around $150 and they will need total refurb in and out and don't know if that's the going price or should attend a swap meet or two . Just looking for more knowledge on these shocks and is the cost worth it . Trail riding only . Any ideals or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

I don't know much about them but I do know they have 2 size shafts. I believe you will want the larger shafts. 12mm I think. They also come in 10mm for conventional mounting. The 12mm were used on the 74 1/2 so you can use the lay down mounts.

If you go with the Marzocchi's, go for the 12mm shaft, the 10mm bent too easily.  I offer rebuild kits for both sizes and also the service to do the rebuild.

Backed off on the ones I was looking at after found out they had 10mm rods.Dale and Rocket suggested to go with 12mm shafts for the layed down position that I have been using . I guess I will use the Corte Cosso till I find the right shaft size Marzocchi . Thanks

This is just my opinion, but I do not like the Zokes unless used in the lay-down position.  To me, and I ride mostly cross country so that may make a difference, the Marzocchi shocks are too stiff in the conventional, upright position.  I also have a 74-1/2 250 HS, and I like them in the lay-down.  It might be my riding style, but they beat me up when used conventionally.

Here is a decent looking set of 13 1/2" works Vintage shocks ready to go for upright use. Mike

Mike - how does preload work on the WP's that you posted?  I would normally jump right in and agree, but - at a minimum, if there is no preload ability, that would have to be a pretty soft spring for trials work, right?

I too have a set of Marzocchi 13.5" on my 72 Jackpiner and rebound is gone. Would like to replace with a set that has a vintage look (chrome springs), riding once restored will be light trail. Any thoughts on Hagon #34026, or any other recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

Normally Works have groovese and a ring type clip that you move to change the preload, but those look like they may require an actual shim to change the preload. Springs of different rates are easy enough to find, and available through works specifically for your application. Mike

Wow no suggestions on the "exclusively made" for harescrambler shocks Progressive  makes?
I know they fit just fine and look great on my 74, and the best part is there 1/2 the price of the WP shocks.  the WP are considered a superior shock too...
Myself I think the Zokes looked out of place on the 74 HS...

If you can find a 13.5" set of Curnutt shocks, those are very good and rebuildable versus the non-rebuildable Progressive shocks. Mike

Parts list states 72 jp came with Girling #51-04-101-100, but other references state Ceriani. Either way, did they finish in black or chromed?
Spring #51-04-011-000
Dirt shield #51-04-013-000
Trying to go the period correct look.

Most 1972's have chrome spring Girlings .  I would buy new NJB shocks , pretty much the same but greatly improved and they have Chromed springs ... Speed and Sport has them .

Mike, I agree with the use of Curnutts.  I own several pair and like them for vintage applications.  they are a bit softer, and I like that for cross country.  Some people call them Cur-Plunks, but at less than $100 for a rebuild they are very affordable.

Just got me a pair . Can't wait to get them on and check out rebounding since I weight 205 . Will put the sherry's away . I am sure I will need to clean them up a little .

Mark's Vintage Swapmeet seems to get a decent amount of Curnutts for sale.

Just received the Marzocchi and the top bushings are missing. Does anyone know were these might be acquired? Never ends!
