I'm looking at an ad for a 1976 Penton MC5 and the asking price is $2,200.00. The engine is frozen.
What is it worth?
The serial number is 5460 89550.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Bryan
If that is the frame number, as opposed to the engine serial number, it is not an MC5, it is a 76 Cross Country. Either way with a frozen engine not worth 2200. I sold a very nice rideable restored 76 MC5 250 myself for 2,200 ready to ride or race few years back at Mid-Ohio to another POG member. Pics would help determine current value. Mike

Its not worth $1200 if the engine is frozen.

Brian,
Thank you for your reply. That's what I thought. I offered them $800.00 but they wouldn't take it.

Yes it is a cross-country model, because the serial number starts with 604 which means the bike was built April of 76. A 76 MC5 would have 550 as the beginning numbers of the serial number after the size designation 54. Mike

The MC5 is a more desirable bike, though that does not mean the Cross Country is undesirable, but the MC5 is a newer generation of chassis. I dont think a '76 Cross Country would be worth $2200 ready to ride, an MC5 maybe.
Brian
It's also a 175cc bike.

I thought it was a 175 from the pipe exhaust tip design. The 54- frame designation was used on 175, 250, and 400's as well. The 250 would have a chrome conical shaped outlet. A 76 175 engine ID would start with 6-52 above the ignition cover on the right hand side of the engine. Mike

I am in the market for a 1970'S MC5 250 or 400.
Please let me know if you run across one.
Best regards,

I have upcoming 76 MC5 250 projects that have yet to be started, but none with the original engines currently. Silver framed MC5 Penton or KTM's were built in 76 and 77, and the orange framed KTM only designated MC5's were built in 1978 only. I have a 78 MC5 chassis and tank also. MC5 were only built for 3 years. Mike

Please keep me in mind if you come across a 250 or 400 from the 70's. I want to ride in vintage motocross races in Texas.
Best regards,

You have a 1975 400. The 411 means it was built in November of 1974. The 55 in the engine number designates a 400.

Check out the Wanted/For Sale section. toocloseracing had a 1976 250 MC5 for sale as of August 8.
Thank you, Nick. I am talking to him about it.
He's asking $2,500.00 but said he'll knock off $250.00 because it needs a new motoplat.
What do you think of the price? Is it fair?
Bryan

It is a well sorted out bike. Wish I could buy it. My advice if you want a nice MC5 is buy it, put a PVL on it, and never look back. The MC5 Penton is one of my all time fave bikes and I have raced a jillion bikes over the years. It was a couple of years ahead of it's time and in 76-77 was many privateer pros bike of choice.
Larry P
Larry, I appreciate the advice.
I'm struggling between a 250 and a 400.

The 250 is far easier to ride but the 400 is doable with the bigger flywheel and short shifting it so you stay out of the big hit.
Larry P
Thank you for that. I have been riding 250 Huskys and they don't do well on big hills. I do a lot of trail riding here in Texas.

I knocked a few bucks and advised Bryan to put it towards a PVL ignition, I already have the coil. No current issues, but my other Pentons are full PVL and I'm convinced it's the way to go - would have done the same with the 250 if I had kept it.
Mr. Adams is all in, we are making arrangement. Thanks for the referral, guys.
