Title: Where to get NOS or repro cables for steel tanker?
Post by: mxfiles on September 03, 2016, 06:31:08 PM
Hi Gang!

I need to get correct color cables that at least "look" OE for my 1969 Six Day Steel tanker...Any good source for these still? I have mix of black and silver and would like all the same...Need throttle, clutch, front brake, comp release.

Any ideas besides eBay?

Thx!

Todd

A clutch cable is by far the hardest to find since they were the one most replaced due to stretching.  I haven't see a front brake cable listing for awhile.  Assumption is you have checked with Al.
Most NOS cables will need the oiler added and have patina to the color.  Aging usually turns the grey a variety of colors.  I've used a grey flexible spray made for shoes to freshen some up.

I purchase new colored cable jacket from the UK (Ebay) use all the original interior cable and hardware and remake my own new.  Transfer the oilers and bingo, there you go.  Only silver solder the ends and use MAPP gas to do so.  Cost is under $25 to do all

Dale,

Ok, so I'm clear...the real OE color is grey/silver correct?

Thx!

The real color for the original cables that came on the bikes is a light grey (almost white). Because of age, the cables become yellowed.

The silver cables were after market. Wassell was one of the manufacturers of these cables.

If the cables you have are good you can buy rolls of gray shrink tubing on ebay for cheap and just cover your old ones.
