Title: Rim Repair/replace??? Painting spokes???
Post by: Scott Summey on October 09, 2016, 06:32:22 PM
Just pulled the wheels apart on a 74.5 Jackpiner. Hubs and brake plates are in good condition and will go to the powder coater this week. Found a crack in each rim, front is a fine crack and about 1/2" long down the shoulder and the back impressively extends through the shoulder to half way across the rim. Big question is has anyone had success repairing a cracked rim and if so did you do the repair yourself or have a shop do it for you? Or did you just replace the rim altogether.

Second question is have any of you re-painted yur spokes or have you just replaced with stainless.

Suggestions and comments solicited. Thanks.

I have seen welded rims, need to have special skills and tools to do it right, so a shop that has done it before would be preferable. Might cost as much as a new rim to do it, so do a cost compare first. As to the spokes, that's a personal preference.I like new spokes especially if you're gonna ride, but some guys repaint with good results, up to you.

A steel rim can be easily welded but if an aluminum rim is welded it will also have to be re-heat treated as the welding will make that area soft as butter.

Excel makes a shouldered rim that looks just like an Akront....Pricey...I put one on my Jackpiner 2 years ago

You can buy new Morad rims from Walridge Motors.  They used to be Akront and have shouldered or non shouldered if I remember.  Just got 2 sets of the non shouldered for CZ's custom drilled.

Thanks for the reply's and e-mails. Just picked up a used set of complete wheels that was listed on e-bay so we'll see if that works out. On the other end of the project, taking hubs and backing plate to the powder coater today, also pulled head and cylinder to be cleaned and blasted and the seat pan to be repaired and reinforced by a couple of local friends. Sure is good to have friends.
