Title: Leaking Filler Neck
Post by: Mick Milakovic on October 19, 2016, 12:48:01 PM
I have a toaster tank with a leak around the base of the filler neck.  How does one go about repairing?

I sealed a leaking filler neck a while back using the Caswell tank sealer. I know that Caswell has mixed reviews on Fiberglass tanks but I've had good luck with it so far by doing a good prep and staying away from Pump Gas. I kept the tank inverted and sealed the top portion including the filler neck area. Hope this helps.

I used liquid steel to fix a leak around a petcock on my stock fiberglass tank, it held up as good as new for years.,stay away from pump gas, and nver leave fuel in a fiberglass tank.

I have in the past just layed a thin bead of fiberglass resin at the base all the way around on the outside and as long as it contacts tank and filler neck it would cease leaking.

Thanks all, great suggestions without cutting the tank open.  Gary and I are going to try and fix it this weekend.  I'll report progress.

If you wind up doing the repair externally I would definitely scuff up or sand both the fiberglass adjoining area and the side of the filler neck so that whatever you do use has the best chance of adherence. Personally I would just paint por-15 clear around the circumference of the filler neck and onto the fiberglass at least 1/4 inch or larger around the circumference of the filler neck. Resin has no strength without fiberglass strands, but might seal. Mike
