Title: 77 or 78 Penton GS6 250?
Post by: Prob on January 26, 2017, 12:44:39 PM
I have been looking for a bike to race in AHRMA and came across this Penton GS6 250. The guy selling it insists that its a 78, but I've never seen a 78 still using the Penton name. Also, is anyone else racing one of these?

Patrick,

That is a 1977 Penton GS6.
1977 Was the last year for the "Penton" branded motorcycles.
The 1977 bikes used the 3 bolt mounted side panels (which this one has). The 1978 came with 2 bolt mounted side panels.
It looks like the original Marzocchi front forks were swapped out for 1979 Marzocchi forks.
Overall a very nice looking bike.

Sometimes what happens is, depending on the state you live in, if a bike sits on the show room floor well into the next model year, then gets purchased and registered, it is sometimes registered for that next year. In other words, it was manufactured for the year 1977, but didn't sell until the following year, and then was titled as a 1978. Sweat looking bike! One of the great "classic" looking enduro machines. Just makes you want to fire it up, throw a leg over it and take off up the trail!
   Type at you later,

Even though the triple clamps looks like 78 models with the swept back bars and the large single pinch fork tube bolts, the lower legs at least look like stock 77 35mm units, as the 78-up fork legs were orange. That should qualify for Post Vintage Historic class. Mike

Thanks for the help. I was hoping to run the historic class and cross country with her. See you guys out there this year.
