I need some understanding this. I know how the ratios are calculated but what does it mean in regards to change in performance? I am currentlly have a 54/13 set up on my 250. I have a 57T in stock. Is that too big of a jump in size or should I buy a new 56T and only go up 2T?

Not tons of difference in feel. Both gear it lower. The 57 is about like keeping your back one and putting a 12 on the front. One on the front is about like 3 on the back. Being mostly a MXer I like the 57 13 because you can do second gear starts and get more holeshots. It also makes for less shifting in the woods and gives you first as a bailout. My opinion on gearing a 250 Penton.

+1 to what Larry said James. I would go with the 57 for all the same reasons. You will most likely have to get a new chain or add a couple links to yours. If you don't want to do that, go to a 12 tooth driver.
Last fall I wanted more low end on my Husky. KD and I could not get the tapered driver off, no matter what we tried. I ended up going to my old kart racing gear ratio chart and had to go with a custom made 60 tooth rear to accomplish what I wanted to do.
Thanks guys! I just wasn't sure if the jump of three teeth would have been too much. I am going to try a 12T with my 54T first to see how I like it. If all goes well I will put the 57/13 combo on with a new chain. I am planning to use the bike more in the woods than MX.
