Title: Motoplat questions
Post by: Steve Minor on April 05, 2017, 03:47:42 PM
I have 2 red body Motoplat coils. One has a longer body and a black spark plug lead. The other is normal sized and has a red spark plug lead. (1) What is the difference between them and (2) can a spark plug lead be spliced? The red body/red spark plug lead has been clipped off about 4 inches from the body. As stated, both are red body.

Thanks

If memory serves the black lead coil had no part of the electronics in the coil but the red one did. With the black lead it was all in the lower unit and with the red part of that was in the coil.  I have spliced a coil lead before and all seemed fine but I have been told it is not the best of ideas.  Mine worked just fine but it was a regular coil.  Motoplat must be different.  I am not a big fan of motoplats and prefer on the Pentons PVL or Powerdynamo.  When I worked at a shop as Parts Manager back in the day we had brand new Motoplats on the shelf that were bad.  It got them the nickname Moto Splat.

Larry, JohnBorn...thanks for the info. I'm going through a 77 125 GS6 barn find. I'm not sure what ignition I'll end up with but it currently has a motoplat. Right now I'm just doing a shake down.

Larry is correct to the best of my knowledge learned from my local fried who repairs them.  The early Motoplats had a diode in the stator which was subject to failure for a variety of reasons.  Heat, vibration, and faulty wiring connections were all detrimental to it.  These units typically used a black wire coil.  The later units moved the diode to the coil and have the red wire.  His typical repair is to take an early unit, remove the faulty diode, and re-epoxy the unit.  He also does rewind some of them the units are for an obscure model bike.  Vance could most likely confirm your question on wire splicing.

The splicer that John Born mentioned is available on Amazon and I think it is a NGK J1.
