What is the proper way to store a steel gas tank... Not on a motorcycle?

If you are refering to keeping the inside from rusting I have put a partial quart of heavy weight engine oil in it, sloshed it around , dumped it out and then put tank in a plastic bag and sealed the bag tight and stored in a basement.  Got a Triumph cub tank that was stored that way since around 1970 and got it our about 5 years ago for a restoration.  Was still perfect.

As far as outside painted surface, a couple good coats of automotive wax will suffice.  Would not wipe outside with anything oily or you might stain the paint.

I believe storing in a constant temp is the most important thing.
You could probably use an engine fogging oil but hey, we all have an old partial quart of oil left over from something we need to use up!
