Title: Dave Mungenast gone eleven years on 9/20
Post by: Paul Danik on September 24, 2017, 01:12:37 PM
Greetings,

Last evening, at the official opening of the ISDT / ISDE exhibit at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, it was brought to my attention that this past Wednesday, September 20, was the eleventh anniversary of the passing of Dave Mungenast.

I am sure many of you have your own personal memories of Dave, but one thing I am sure all would agree upon, is that Dave was surely one of the nicest gentleman one could ever want to meet.

Below is a link to the Mungenast Classic Motorcycle Museum in St. Louis, a must visit facility started by a very much missed gentleman.

Growing up here in the St. Louis area, I was naturally a Cardinals fan from an early age and idolized Olando Cepada. Then I discovered motorcycles, saw On Any Sunday, and became an enduro/ISDT fanatic. Then I found out we had a guy here in St. Louis who WAS and ISDT rider, and Orlando Cepada was quickly knocked out of first place hero status. Dave had a off road riding area called Doe Run Cycle Park back in the day, and that is where I more or less learned how to ride, and Dave spent quite a bit of time there working on the trails and such. He was such a great guy to talk to and ask questions about riding. My first brand new motorcycle was a '75 250WR Husqvarna that was purchased from Dave's St. Louis Honda Dirt Bike Headquarters on Gravois not far from where the museum is now, and Dave was the salesman on the purchase. I bought the Husky because he could not get any more 250 Pentons at that time back in 1975! I still have that bike. I stopped riding in '76 to get married and raise a family and such and it was a chance meeting with Dave at a AMA flat track race at Tri-City Speedway near here that got me back into riding and the vintage movement. Dave was very gracious and still the same. At my first ISDT Reunion Ride in Cass, AR I thought I would try to hang with Dave after the start of the first day. That lasted about 75 yards! Many, many more memories of Dave that I will cherish for ever, and he is still my number 1 sports hero! We do miss you Dave!
   Type at you later,

I remember reading a Popular Cycling article about Dave Mungenast in the Spring of 1976, when I was laid up with a broken leg.  It was called "How to be 41, Funny and Fast" - great article.
