Title: POG 50th. Anniversary event Amherst, Ohio
Post by: Paul Danik on November 05, 2017, 10:37:29 AM
Greetings,

On March 10th 1968, a team of 6 Penton riders led by John Penton rode the Stone Mountain National Enduro on 6 of the first ten serial production Pentons to be built, with John Penton riding V-001. The first 10 serial production Pentons had arrived by air freight to Cleveland, Ohio just days before.

On March 10th, 2018, fifty years to the day of that first outing of the Penton Sportcycle, the Penton Owners Group will be hosting a celebration in Amherst, Ohio of that monumental day in Penton history, as well as celebrating the Golden Anniversary of the Penton Sportcycle.

The green light to host this event inside the beautiful facility on the KTM campus only came a few days ago. Jack Penton and I were able to tour the building with Robert Pierce before the POG meeting on Thursday evening, it is beautiful and very spacious. There is more than enough space to display motorcycles and memorabilia as well as host the days events inside, out of the weather.

The Penton Owners Group can not thank Robert Pierce and KTM enough for all of their unending support and enthusiasm.

Lots of exciting and interesting plans are in the works, but we wanted to get the word out ASAP so that folks could start to plan on attending. Below are some of the main facts about the event.

Date. Saturday March 10, 2018

Location. KTM Campus, Amherst, Ohio

Facility. Large and beautiful KTM building.

Time. All Day. Mid morning till early evening.

Who knows, the day could conclude with a pizza party and a movie...

More details will be announced in a timely manner, please spread the word. Watch your POG newsletter for more details as well. POG membership is not required to attend any of the POG events, but if there is a year when you will want to surely be a member this Golden Anniversary year is it, and you can rest assured your support is greatly appreciated.

Hope to see you there.

Paul,
I think I have a trophy for that race. Got it from Leroy Winters family, It is labeled "First Team" Stone Mountain Enduro 1968.
Could that be the same race?

Kevin,

   That is simply incredible...

Given the results that they attained individually, it sure looks like they certainly could have won the Team competition.

The individual results from that first outing of the Penton as taken from the John Penton book; Tom Penton was Bantamweight class champion, Al Born won his class, and Leroy Winters and John Penton finished second and third respectively in the A Lightweight class.

Any chance of having that prestigious trophy at the gathering in March  ? Hopefully you will be attending.

We have lined up V-001 to be on display and hope to possibly have a couple more of the first six machines on display as well.

I have tried to find the results from that event with no success, possibly they are out there somewhere and will turn up.

Thanks Kevin for that exciting news...:D

Do you want bikes for display?  I can bring a 71 ST, 72 CMF and 76 CMF if needed.  Would be cool to have every year and model there!

Kip,

YES, the more machines on display the better. We have been provided tons of room by Robert Pierce and KTM...lets fill it.

Possibly what we can do is line up all the machines in chronological order so that as you walk the line you will be able to see how the bikes evolved. That is how we did the lineup at the POG / KTM display at the Hall of Fame Museum many moons ago and it worked well. We can also group the specialty machines together as well, like the Wassels and such.

Below is a link to the photos from the POG/KTM event held at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame on August 21, 2005. If any of you reading this have not looked at the photos, grab yourself a coffee or ??? and take a few minutes to enjoy these great photos from a day that was simply incredible. In the almost 20 years that the POG has been in existence, this day has to rank right near the top of POG memorable events.

In closing in my reply to KIP, I would like to urge all of you to make every effort possible to attend this event. Lets collectively work towards putting a smile on a man's face who has done so much for all of us as well as the two wheeled community, John Penton.

John and Donna Penton at the POG Family Night on December 4, 2008. They were laughing at the antics of Pat Leimbach as the "Farmer's wife" entertained all of us.

What does the group think about hiring someone to video tape the event, put it on a disc, and then offer them for sale to the members that can't make the event?

Skiracer,

A number of years ago Ted Guthrie expressed an interest in recording the POG happenings as he knew the historic value of capturing those events. Ted was given the green light by the POG board to check out the available cameras and pretty soon he had his choice made and the camera was bought. Ted and his wonderful wife Reb became quite a team in not only recording the events but editing them as well.

This link should take you to the POG Video Gallery where the fruits of Ted and Reb's labors are listed.

http://www.pentonusa.org/videos/default.asp

At the last POG meeting I asked Ted about recording the upcoming event and he seemed anxious to do so...:D Ted is now the President of the Ohio Valley BSA Owners Club but he still finds the time to help out the Penton Owners Group and attend many of the meetings. One great guy and a busy one at that !

Long answer to your question.... but I wanted to present a little background on the subject.

Thanks for keeping your thinking hat on, it is greatly appreciated. Hopefully you can make the March event, we would love to see you there.

Paul

PS  Here is one of their videos, it is of Doug Wilford telling about the naming of the Penton Sportcycle models.

Southrider,

I will be checking with Ted on that footage and will see what can be done to make it available. I would sincerely believe that nothing that Ted and Reb ever recorded was ever scraped. We had discussions years ago about the potential value of even the unused footage from the other DVDs that they made and the plan was to keep every bit of raw video. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Kip, and others.

The more the merrier...  The available display area will hold an incredible amount of machines and memorabilia and every item helps to tell the story. But even more importantly, just think of the smile that will be on John Pentons face as he looks over all of the assembled items and machinery, and most importantly the folks who have gathered together on such a monumental day in Penton history.

It is interesting how in the last year or so when we would discuss something about "back in the day" how John would often just shake his head and say "can you believe how long ago that was" !

To all, I have no crystal ball and most assuredly I can not tell you how this event will turn out, but rest assured all the stops are being pulled and I guess the old racing term WFO just might apply here. The committee of folks working together to make this event happen are totally committed to making it an unforgettable experience for one and all. I do have to say that is how the 40th was planned as well.

I spoke with Tom Penton at the Celebration of Life for Donna Penton and he was planning on attending along with Dave Duarte and Eric Jenson.

One other quick note about the 40th. We had a date set and had announced it, Jack called late one night and said we simply can not hold the event on that date as he found out that the big world class event was being held at Indy that weekend, super bikes or something. I stammered around a bit as I hate changing published dates but finally agreed to his logic. Turns out the Indy event was pretty much a gully washer and our event would have been as well, but the new date was absolutely perfect weather. I still thank Jack for that one...:D

Thanx for looking into it Paul.

I've brought it up every few years since the 40th, and since it has never been offered I started wondering if it got damaged or lost accidentally.

More than willing to buy a DVD of the footage - edited or uncut. I know it's a ton of work to put it together.

It really was a great event, and every time I looked up they were there shooting - even riding backwards in the parade on the back of Busick's "scooter".

I did some checking on the master video discs that I have. There are 4 disc on the Penton 40th anniversary event that Ted Guthrie had put together. That's about 4+ hours of viewing.

These videos cover footage of the displays, the bus tour of the Penton buildings, the motorcycle parade to John Penton's House, the banquet, and a look at each bike that was on display outside.  [:p]

There is a lot of time involved for reproducing these that involves copying each disc, labeling them, and putting them into sleeves. If i can receive a commitment from 5 people to buy a set of these, then I will be willing to make up the copies. Price would be $30 per set and would include postage to anywhere in the USA.

I am offering my time to do this at no charge. All proceeds after postage costs go directly to the POG.

Greetings,

Here is an update / addition to the March 10th. event.

We will be serving breakfast on Sunday March 11th. inside the KTM building, starting at about 8:30. The concept is that this will allow for folks to remove and load their machines and memorabilia in the daylight and after a nights rest, instead of after watching the John Penton movie on Sat afternoon / evening. Plus, it will provide a nice way to conclude the event and say some unhurried farewells as we have our morning meal.

In the season of folks wanting to have "breakfast with Santa", we are providing the opportunity for all to have "breakfast with John" on March 11, 2018 as we celebrate the "First Fifty Years of the Penton Sportcycle"':D

We are asking that everyone have everything they need for their display of cycles and other items when they arrive. We can point out where you can set up, but we will not be able to supply tables, cycle stands and the like. If you wish to bring an EZ-up for your display there is plenty of height and area to do so.

We hope to have the KTM building cleaned out and back to "normal" by around noon on Sunday March 11th.

Paul

    Hello Al;
I bought a 4 disc set from an eBay seller several years ago, titled "At Home with John Penton and has 2007 and 2008 copyright dates on them. Is this the set you are referring to? I haven't watched them in a long time so don't really remember what all is on them.

Dan,

The 4 disc "at home with John Penton" is a different video that was filmed and put together by Ted and Reb Guthrie.
A few people spent a Day with John as he walked around his property sharing stories and pointing things out as Ted and Reb captured everything with their camera.
I don't remember all the details of that video, however, I am sure that Al Born and Doug Wilford are part of it.

Greetings,

In the newly created addition to the John Penton Story which is explained in a separate thread,
 http://www.pentonusa.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17976,
there is a nice segment that tells of the beginnings of the Penton Sportcycle.

Although many of you already know the story, what makes this telling of the story so special is that it is told by folks who were a part of it, and tell of their personal experiences and involvement. It was very, very special to see Doug Wilford in this newly created segment, along with a number of photos that I know I have never seen before and possibly they will be new to you as well.

The trip with the then newly created Penton to the Stone Mountain National Enduro, which is part of what the March event is celebrating, is also detailed. What perfect timing for the release of this additional footage..:D

Al Born rode V-003 in the Stone Mountain event and John Born is planning to have it on display for us to see. John provided me with a copy of the results of the event which shows that Al Born won his class with a score of 919, we plan on having an enlarged copy of these results on display as well. John said he will have his father's trophy from that event also displayed...    Thank You John Born for all of your efforts.

Penton V-001 which is the machine that John Penton rode in the Stone Mountain event will also be on display, courtesy of Dale Barris.

If you have anything you wish to display please do not hesitate to bring it along for all to see. You never know, your item just might be the piece that helps to fill in a blank in the telling of the story of the Penton Sportcycle.

I have received sever phone calls from people who cannot decide whether to attend this event because of long distance driving and concerns over not being able to bring their bikes because they will be flying in.

My response has been do not be concerned about not being able to bring bikes or memorabilia to show. JUST BE THERE IF YOU CAN. This may be the last chance opportunity to experience this type of event. If it is too far to drive and you can afford to fly in and rent a car, then do so. I have talked to a couple of people who will be flying in on Friday and leaving on Sunday afternoon.

The agenda is still being worked out. So far, the plan is to set up on Saturday morning, POG meeting late morning, catered lunch, an afternoon activity, and movie in the evening with pizza. Sunday morning will be a breakfast with packing up of the bikes and displays.

Final details will be listed in the next POG newsletter.

Also, There are still some 40th anniversary DVD sets still available.
To order a set - make a check payable to THE PENTON OWNERS GROUP in the amount of $30 and mail to:

I am very excited to see all of you in March! For those of you asking about HOTELS IN THE AREA.

There are a number but many are very old and not recommended. Following are three that I will recommend.

All are 10 to 15 minutes from KTM. The Hampton is the newest, the Country is the lease cost and the Holiday is the closest.

Country Inn and Suites - Elyria, OH 440-324-0099 8.3 mi east

Hampton Inn and Suites - Elyria, OH 440-324-7755 9.4 mi east

Holiday Inn - Vermilion, OH 440-9678770 7.7 mi west

See you soon, Jack.

Greetings,

At the recent York swapmeet there was a phrase that was heard over and over again at the POG booth... " See you in March. "

" Back in the day " there was a saying that " all roads lead to Rome ". I do think that on a certain weekend in March " all roads just might lead to Amherst ", a few air routes too !!!

Newsletter editor Alan Buehner has been burning the midnight oil in getting the very special Anniversary Edition of Still....Keep Track ready for the printer, as he wants to get it into the hands of all POG members a couple of weeks before the big event.

If you are not a POG member may I suggest that you consider joining as POG member dues is what keeps this website going, along with much volunteer time by Bill Smith and his crew, and you most certainly will not want to miss out on Alan's handiwork....

If you wish to join the POG here is the link to help you do so.

http://www.pentonusa.org/join/join.asp

I have had a few folks ask about the set up schedule. The doors will open at 8am for folks to start to arrive and set up memorabilia and motorcycles for display. We plan on getting the days festivities under way at 10am and want to have set up completed by then.

If you have nothing to display but still wish to arrive at 8am to start drinking coffee, eating doughnuts and bench racing with your old friends feel free to do so.

We plan on having a sign in table set up where folks can fill out a name tag when they arrive.

Folks have asked about some of the special guests who plan on attending. Carl Cranke, Eric Jenson, Tom Penton, Jeff Penton, Dave Duarte and Todd Huffman are a few of the ones I know of...and of course Jack Penton will most certainly be there....John Penton too..! The list is longer and it keeps growing.

Sunday morning breakfast will be served from 8am - 9am in the same building. Display materials and motorcycles can be left overnight and loaded up on Sunday morning. We hope to have some casual time Sunday morning to say farewell and do a little more visiting as time allows. We hope to have the KTM building emptied and cleaned up by noon.

There are no fees to pay or per-registrations to worry about. Just show up and enjoy what should be a very special day as we celebrate The First Fifty Years of the Penton Sportcycle.

Paul

If you can attend the monthly meeting, it's a good way to meet the other people involved with Penton.

I am so excited to be able to be there. When asked by a friend why I was going to the 50th anniversary party, I replied that John Penton and his creation, the Penton Motorcycle, really defines my whole life time dirt bike experience. In 1968 I was racing a DT1 Yamaha enduro in the Michigan, Ohio and other midwest events (owned the first DT1 imported into Michigan). I remember vividly at the Jack Pine that year a little bike screaming and passing me and afterwards I asked the other riders "what was that?" The answer - the new Penton Six Day!!! I had to have one and got mine soon afterwards. I entered the Berkshire International 2 day in 1971 and had the joy of riding with John, Jack, Paul and many others that weekend. I was one of about 26 riders out of the about 125 riders in the 125cc class that started and finished the first day. The next year I moved to the Ozarks and put the bikes in the barn. I didn't touch a bike for 38 years, then in 2000, my son asked me to get the bike in the barn running so he could ride it when he came home from college that summer. He found the POG site and I called Al Buehner to figure out what I needed to get my 6 day running again. He was excited that I had a 6 day from the day, and said that I needed to come to Mid-Ohio and be part of a parade with John Penton leading the parade. I saw him with a Penton flag leading a single line of bikes in a parade around the compound. I was excited. Rosemary and I bought camping gear and headed for Mid-Ohio. The parade turned out to be a Motocross race. I was lined up with a 20+ year old on a 250cc Penton and a 40+ year old on a Mint 400 on either sides of me. I was wearing farmer boots, jeans and a helmet i found from somewhere. Someone looked at the original 40 year old cracked tires that were on my 1970 Six day and said "be careful on the jumps". JUMPS? This is supposed to be a parade lap!!!!! The rubber band snapped and we were off. My goal - to stay upright for one lap. After one lap, my arms were shot but I was still upright, so let's try another lap. The next lap went better so lets try another lap. Then I was passing people, wow, this is really fun!!! At the end of the Penton parade lap/Race (which John was not in!!!), I ended up 22 out of 27 guys and I was HOOKED!!! Racing was in my blood!!!! Over the the next 17 years I enjoyed racing the AHRMA cross country and motocross series and the MOVMX series on Penton motorcycles!!!! I have met an incredible number a wonderful people during these years. I want to thank John for all that he has done to create an environment for us to have so much fun. God bless you John, and I know He has.

Greetings,

Several questions have come up about the possibility of a Penton Parade at this event. There will be NO parade, and we discourage ANY riding on KTM's property what so ever. The grassy areas will be soft and muddy and it will be chilly enough that the pavement can be slippery with moisture or......

We plan on having folks unload their display bikes right at the entry to the building so they can just wheel them inside without tracking up the floors, memorabilia also will be off loaded here as well. We plan on having a POG EZ-UP set up at the entry we will be using to make it obvious where to head once you enter the KTM property.

We plan on doing a walk thru of the building next week and will update any of this info as needed at that time.

Just a heads up on the fact that the time change for daylight savings time occurs on Saturday night during the event, spring ahead as they say.....so we will lose an hours sleep. Mr. Wardlow's predication that there will be no time to sleep is becoming more and more accurate...:D

Well, seeing as the Schnell Meister (Speedy Clausen) and Gary Richards are coming down from the great white north, The PunkinHead Posse will be there from St. Louis. My big brother Tom, nephew Chuck, myself and a friend, Jan Pott will be making the trip. Jan ran a local motorcycle parts shop and was a Penton Dealer back in the day. Looking forward to seeing old friends from ISDT Reunion Rides and enjoying the festivities, and getting to see and meet John Penton again.

What say you Ohio natives about the weather for this weekend?

I plan on hauling 2 Pentons from Louisiana on Thursday in an open 3/4 ton truck with summer A/T tires.

Should I anticipate any problems?

Weather Underground says one to three inches of snow on Thursday but by Friday it should be clearing off so by the time you get there late Thursday or early Friday you should be good. Mike

There was blowing snow in Elyria when we pulled into town tonight and checked in at the Hampton Inn. Gonna rest up from t he drive a bit and take a test run to the KTM building so we know where we are going tomorrow. The Christmas Story house is suppose to be near here so we may explore a bit and see if we can find that.
Looking forward to the festivities tomorrow!

First time poster here. Just home from 50th and all I can say is absolutely amazing. Had to be 100 pentons on display and hundreds of members, spectators, and lots and lots of riders and crew from back in the day. JP unanimously voted POG president. Bonus movie footage. Steel tank 001 002 and 003 together by the stage. Tours of the KTM facility and gift shop. I am sure others will post favorite moments but wow what a show. Complete Penton Overload. As usual, many many many thank yous out to the Penton family, the POG officials and volunteers, KTM ,and especially Jack Penton for pulling the whole thing off. Thank you all for the hard work and dedication. Hey Jack when is the next one? LOL

We came up from Texas for the big 50th anniversary and were not disappointed.  Everything was first class.  The KTM tour was wonderful along with the personal interviews. The bikes on display, wow!! I actually got to put faces with some names.  Hats off to all the POG trustees, members and I'm sure numerous others who helped, it was absolutely exceptional.

Greetings,

I don't know if John Penton and his cohorts celebrated their results after the March 10th. 1968 introduction of his Penton Sportcycle to the world, but I do know there was one heck of a party fifty years later to the day that more than made made up for it if they didn't !

Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you ! To one and all who helped in any way to put on the 50th. Anniversary event and also to those who attended it. Somewhere in the area of 500 people came together on Saturday and filled the KTM provided facility to the limit, apparently drawn to it like tiny nails to a magnet, and the magnet in this case was none other than John Penton.

Paul

PS  Friday evening there was a group of folks working away at setting up the tables and chairs for Saturday. One of those folks told me Sunday morning that as he helped to place those chairs he thought to himself, "we aren't going to need all of these chairs" ! I'll bet the hundred or so folks who were standing thought otherwise :D

Many many thanks to Paul Danik, The Penton Family,Bud and Pat Green, and all the ladies of Penton for a fantastic event. There was a ton of work done before, during, and after this event - and it all went off perfectly (on key time too!).

And I can't forget to mention Robert Pearce, Jerry Birky, and all the rest from KTM who so graciously hosted about 500 of us fanatics who were poking peering and wandering all over their campus all weekend (even setting off some alarms). Hope things are back to normal by now.
