just curious of how the piston is positioned.

As I pulled the cylinder off, the piston on the exhaust side has a opening in front. I just thought it looked out of place and that should be on the intake side.

It should be on the intake side.

There is a small hole on the intake side of the piston, it's just on the exhaust side  there is a larger  hole just below the Rings.

The small hole 1/8"?would be to lubricate the bridge in the exhaust port , no?
