I have had success expanding out the air boot entrance by warming the boot on hot water, or holding over a kerosene heater, when the boot is at room temperature it is usually too stiff to do much of anything with, I wear a pair of cheap cotton work gloves when working with the hot boot; you may have about 5 minutes of working time etc...

A blow dryer on it's own or after the hot water soak helps also.  The hotwater trick gives life again to those boots that are hard like plastic which is what a lot of the old ones are like.
