Title: Tire Choice > Chain Guard Clearance
Post by: imported_n/a on April 25, 2019, 05:40:23 PM
Shopping tires for '73 Jackpiner. WM3 rear rim, WM2 front. Have been pouring over posts here on POG site and I'm a bit confused by some of the info/contradictions. Here's my most pressing question: Can anyone tell me what size/brand rear tire they're using that is narrow enough indeed to clear the Chain Guard without having to trim the knobbies? So far, the closest I've come is a Kenda 400 x 18. I'm also shopping Pirelli MT-16 110/100 x 18", Duro HF335 4-10-18", and Michelin S-12 120/90 x 18". (Had a 350 x 18" Cheng Shin on a Six Day that worked but I hear they're no longer available). Thanks as always.

I've had some success using the Pirellis and pulling the rim over slightly left of center when lacing the spokes to provide a bit more clearance for the chain guard. Prefer the Pirellis over the Duro and Cheng Shin brands as they look more true to the original Metzlers and wear a lot better. The Kenda would be my second choice.

I'm not sure how they hold up for racing, but the Kenda K257D has the same tread pattern as the old Metzler's, and offer a 3.50-18 and a 4.10-18, as well as 4.50-18 for bigger bikes at very reasonable prices. Dennis Kirk is my preference, other than some deals on eBay. Mike
