Title: Sachs cylinder question

I have a couple of 100 cylinders with slots cut in the bottom of them both front and rear where they drop into the cases. Any idea what these were for?

Carl,
 
   Those slots provide clearance for the rod, the 125 is obviously a bigger bore and the rod clearance is no issue hence no slots, but the 100 is a different situation.

Ahhhh that makes sense. I am building a 125 and noticed the difference. Thank you sir.
