Title: 1979 or 1980 ktm 250 GS
Post by: enduro_1980 on December 17, 2020, 06:53:16 PM
I got a ktm 250 gs. It has a 6 speed, 38 mm marzocchi, aluminum swing arm, rear frame loop, vdo speedometer, big tank with 4 bolts for the tool bag. No title.
Vin number is 9088786 I found out it was build in august 1979 but I can not really tell if it is a 1979 or 1980 model. The engine number is 9 5425153. When do the factory start the new year production?
Could you get a gs from the factory or they came as MC and the buyer could get a enduro kit.
So if someone could help me determine the model year?

Does it really matter which year it is?  It's a great bike, enjoy it!

Very little if any differences between the 79 and 80 model years. There might be a slight difference between the plastic side panels, and definitely the decals, but they are interchangeable between the years. All the structural items like the frames, swingams, forks ,shocks are the same.

If you want to invest the time to navigate this site there are many photos of 1979 and 1980 KTMs.  It is not simple but not hard either.  It will take a little time.  Good luck.
