Title: 71 Six Day Skid Plate Photo Needed.
Post by: KJDonovan on March 24, 2025, 07:24:33 AM
I am in the process of refreshing a 71 Steel Tank Six Day and I am looking for a good photo of what other owners are using for a skid plate.  This particular bike did not have one when it arrived here, and I thought they may have used the same as the CMF bikes, but according to the parts manual (002) it's a 2 piece unit. I attempted to fit a later CMF skid plate, but it doesn't line up as the down tubes are more narrowly spaced than the CMF bikes.  Anyone got a good picture of what is supposed to be on there?

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin,
You are correct. The #002 parts book shows a two-piece skid plate but to be honest I've never seen one like that on a 69-71 model. All of the 69-71 Steeltank bikes I've ever encountered had a one piece skid plate like the ones used on CMF bikes. I've attached pictures taken this morning of the skid plate on V4047 which I know is an all original bike. The holes are spaced 3 5/8" ctr-to-ctr at the forward end and 5 3/8" ctr-to-ctr on the bottom. Hope this helps.

Dave,

Super helpful - this is exactly what I was looking for!  I will trim the sides of one of the CMF skid plates I have here to fit inside the down tubes on this bike.  Thanks so much for the info and photos!
