Title: Exhaust Pipe paint
Post by: Harris on December 03, 2002, 09:27:11 AM
I recently used a high heat paint on my 72 125 exhaust. It blistered! Any proven suggestions as to a good high heat paint. Are the PJ1 high heat paints any good. Would the correct original color for a 125 Six day,be a high gloss or semi gloss black.
Any suggestions.
Thanks,
Harris

Harris,
we have used al kinds of vht paint and have found only one brand to be unsatisfactory.
 that was plastic coat.
a semigloss would be close to the orignal.
if you heat up the head pipe with a torch just befor you paint , it should not blister and work fine. not red hot just up around 500 degs will do.

Harris,
I've used several different brands, and my success is largely dependant on the heat rating.  The higher the better.  Don't use something only rated to 500 deg, go to 1000 or better.  Also, John is right, semi-gloss works best.  Some go on looking light flat black, but all you have to do is wipe the pipe when dry and it "polishes" to a semi-gloss shine.
