KTM engines starting coming with a new style bearing cover in the mid-70s at some point. In looking at the schematic of the design, is there any mechanical advantage gained by the new design? If I were going to update one of my engines, would it make sense to use on a 400 or 250 or 175? Any insight would be helpful.

They only came on 1977 models. A better, longer lasting lever arrangement, however rocks getting inbetween the c spk and guard cracked the alum, even with the steel slip on guard. Probebly good for mx use but I wouldnt advise for nasty trail use. In 78 they went back to the old cover.
