Title: fork spacing
Post by: tomale on March 16, 2003, 08:43:01 PM
While I am at it there is something that I have always wondered about. I did lose any sleep over it but here goes.... When I put my front wheel on. How much reveal of the larger part of the axle should there be between the two fork legs? If I allow for no reveal I wonder if I am forcing the legs to move and flex in a way that they were not intended. and if I put too much reveal I get the same thing in the opposite direction. So how much space should there be for proper alignment between the fork legs?

I always tighten the axle nut, then hold the front brake on and work the forks up and down while stradling the machine,  this allows the fork tube to find it's sweetspot.  Then I tighten the pinchbolts. Hope this helps.

That does help, Thank you very much.
I wonder if it would be a good idea to do that and then mark the spot on the large section of the axle. Maybe use the edge of a file and carfully create a ring to establish the reveal? Just a thought.
