Title: clean fiberglass tanks
Post by: tomale on October 07, 2003, 12:34:39 PM
FYI,After putting my bike back into service after 25 plus years I had thought that the tank was clean....(it looked clean) but I was still getting this red stuff in my in-line filter. ON Sat. the last moto of the day my bike kept dying. What I found was that my petcock plugged up with the same stuff. I had thought that this stuff was oil that had gone bad because of cooler weather. but that was not possible.
What is the Point? I decided to do the Berryman and BB treatment. After doing it I found the the cleaner turned a deep dark amber color.
The moral of the story is this. If your bike has been sitting for  awhile it is a good Idea to clean your tank even though it looks like it is clean...
If I had done this, it would have saved me some grief.

Hey bigdan,
Actually I used Laquer thinner and BB's then I flushed it out with  gas and emptied it out and let is dry. I know this is agressive but I could not think of anything else that would work, besides I looked at the contents of the berryman and it used many of the same cemicals as laquer thinner. Be carful not to breath the stuff and do it out side. I did test to see if it would melt the fiberglass and it did not. I do not think that it would be a good idea to leave the stuff in the tank. I never allowed it to be in there more than ten minutes at a time. I repeated the process several times until I thought that I had it good an clean. Each time I flushed it with laquer thinner I poured it into a container that had a funnel that had a metal strainer in it. This way I could see if I was getting any thing new from the tank. I was amazed at how much stuff I was getting. Test it first before you use any kind of cleaner.
Nice to talk with someone else that has mc-5's how long have you had them?
