Title: Steering Head Bearings Part #?
Post by: penton117 on October 09, 2003, 10:32:29 AM
Hi Guys,
Does anyone know the correct type and / or part number for stering head bearing on a 1975 250cc Hare Scrambler? I bought a basket case and it no front end or bearings. I have forks and triple clamps but am not sure of the correct bearing. Are they loose balls, tapered rollers or something else?
Thanks.

117,
i think only Dr 2 stroke has the bearing races instock. Al has a back order from KTM that must be a year old on them. it takes 16 1/4 inch loose ball bearings on each set of races. i use 17 and it seems to work better.
we found some tapered roller bearings that will work with some machineing of the stem od . you have to buy two sets to get 2 the right size . its about $80 for the 2 sets from Pro Flow. we are about to try the tapers on one of our bikes and will let you know whats involved in making them fit.

If your bearing races are good, you can get 1/4" replacement ball bearings from your local bicycle shop. It calls for 16 per race but like John said, 17 seem to work better.

117, I have found that the parts manual that I got from Al has been very helpful not just in ordering but also at times figuring out assembly order. MY memory is not as good as it use to be. This is different than a repair manual. I wish you good fortune in your efforts to build that bike.
Keep the tank side up!

Thom Green,I own and ride a 76 250 MC5 MX which I bought new.
