Title: MC5 cain size
Post by: penton117 on January 19, 2004, 10:42:26 AM
Hello Fellow Poggers,

Can some one verify for me the correct chain size on my 1977 250cc MC5. I think it takes a 530 chain but wanted to verify before I buy one.

Thanks,

Don

Don,
It should have 520 on it but could use 530 if someone put the wider sprockets on it.  520 is easier to get.

Randy,

I bought a 520 chain, but the distance from point-to-point on the sprocket doesn't line up. Is the 530 same distance, but wider? If so, I don't know what kind of set up I have. Any help?

Don,
520 & 530 should be the same except the width.  If you're trying to put 520 chain on a 530 sprocket, it might not be setting down in the teeth of the sprocket.  530 chain will fit on a 520 sprocket except it's too wide.

Don
530 chain measures 5/8" x 3/8" wide and 520 is 5/8" x 1/4" wide.  The 5/8" is from pin to pin.

Don, My Mc 5 had a 530 chain on it but when it was time to replace the chain it was also time to change the sprockets too. I went to the 520 chain because of the availability. The other thing too is because the 530 chain is harder to find.. it could be more exspensive to get. These things do not last for ever and you can get a pretty good selection of replacement sprockets for the 520 chain. I bought the spockets from Al B. and went down to the local bike shop for the chain. Shop around I found that the price of chains verys a great deal. As much as ten bucks for the same chain.

Thom Green,I own and ride a 76 250 MC5 MX which I bought new.
