Title: Repop 1980 Side Panels....
Post by: DKWRACER on March 06, 2004, 09:40:52 PM
There has been some communications in this matter, have now received two, so it appears that there is some interest. I should also mention that there should be no mis-communication about the 1980 side panel. Before I begin, if you have a photo to exchange, it would help in the process, the early 80's seemed to envolve changes yearly. Any help is thoroughly welcomed. I have three, both enduro and MX, me thinks they had the same side panels, p/s I am still working on the original headlight bucket from mid 70's...three times worked over to create the "master" maybe by tomorrow.....Thanks, Tom...

I have a 1980 KTM 250 GS and would love to have a remanufactured set of side panels.

Count me IN for at least 1 set, maybe 2 if necessary.  One for racing and one for when I eventually sell the bike.

From what Larry Perkins has told me the remanufactured pieces are done in unpainted fiberglass and won't turn yellow over time as do the NOS white plastic side panels.

Try it again, I don't think I set it up correctly for "Sharing" before.  It is now.

I'm glad this has come up. I was wanting to thank Tom publically for the nice job he does with fiberglass panels. I reluctantly bought a pair of panels for my 1978 MC5 from him when I was building it in December, 2002. I say reluctantly because I really wanted plastic panels, not fiberglass. However, I raced the MC5 in 16 National AHRMA races last year, 8 of which were 1 hour Cross Country races, and the panels held up beautifully. They don't look new now, but they still look good.

This last winter I built a 1980 MC80. I bought the second pair of new plastic panels from the same guy that Phil bought his panels from. Unfortunately for me and good for phil, I got the panels for the 125cc MC80 frame which is different than the panels for the 250cc MC80 frame which Phil got. Al Buehner had one panel for my bike, the left side, and it is now on my bike, but there was no right side panel to be found. I am using the funky, ugly, painted 20 times and cracked panel that was on my bike when I got it and would LOVE to buy a new set from Tom. So Tom, count me in for a set.

PS

Phil, the panels you have are for the MX not the GS. The GS panels do not have the number plates and are very small. FYI.

Teddy,

They look exactly like the sidepanels on a picture found at http://web.tiscali.it/ktm70pages/anni80.htm.  The picture is shown on the bottom left titled as "Michele KTM 1980 250 GS".

After viewing this photo can anyone confirm or deny that my side panels are MX or GS?

Anyway, mine are NOS and look GREAT!  It doesn't seem right, and seems such a shame for me to not inquire about reproducing these side panels for the benefit of others.  They seem to be so RARE.

Hi Teddy,

My brother and I are redoing a MC80 125 and could use a set of panels if you don't need them.

These side panels are very complex, a master can be made but the part must pop out of the mold with little resistance....preserving the slots my require me to plug them from the backside maintaing the depth of the slot, so some Dremel time may be required to re-open the slots. If I do it, the costs would be quite high so I will leave that up to the purchaser. I have asked Phil to send me them in order to consult with my mold maker etc....Thanks everyone....

Phil,

The ones you have are the MX covers.  The picture I sent you are the GS covers.  The GS covers have no "number plates" and are much smaller.  Perhaps you can post the pictures I sent you.

Cheers,

Oscar

What I want is a GS rear fender.

I am going to install a Preston Petty rear fender, then I am going to "repair" mine and try to get it repro'd.

Hi Tom,

You shouldn't be surprised since you've earned the respect and admiration of Larry Perkins, aka "The Penton Man".  He's the one who gave me your name as a respected resource to see about having these MX side panels reproduced.

They are nice aren't they?  It seems such a shame to squander them for personal reasons.  Now, can see why I would like them made available for others?

Side panels made it to my fiberglass guy, it was agreed that the slots will have to be covered to get a clean release, edge chipping is a concern. So hopefully I will know in one week how the "master" is coming...I don't know the costs as yet but will try to hold below 100.00 per set...stay tuned...p/s the master for the headlight shells looks VG and should have a mold in one week

Tom,

I met Dave Withrow this weekend at the ISDT Vintage Qualifier (GREAT weekend!!!!) and he said that Mike Lenz would likely be an interested party for these reproduction side panels.

Coming full circle around these future pieces, I saw the molds today....very reasonable they are....the repops will require patience and a little sweat equity, oh but what we might have.....To me, its worth the effort, when I get the first out of the mold, I will decide the worthiness and report back.....Thanks

Recieved the first out of the molds today and they are presentable, so I am offering them for sale, will also post to the suppliers section in a few days. I could not preserve the cooling slots so a little Dremel time will be required....
Many Thanks for the patience and the assistance of Larry Perkins and Phast Phil, without, this would not have happened......

Plant a seed, watch it grow, ...there might be another offing in the process..perhaps a fender from another very dedicated member of the Penton Owners Group....I fall at your feet.....

Tom,

I have an NOS aftermarket (Maier) rear fender for the MC-80 KTMs that I would let someone borrow to use as a pattern to repop these hard to find items. Let me know if you are interested.
This is an exact copy of the original, not a universal type fender that just happens to fit.
